---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN WINS AIR FORCE'S "AFCAC" 308 CONTRACT ESTIMATED AT $48 MILLION SunFLASH Vol 26 #3 February 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --February 5, 1991-- Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc., a subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, has been awarded a multi-year contract to supply the U.S. Air Force with workstations and related products. Called the Air Force Computer Acquisition Center Project (AFCAC) 308 contract, it is expected to reach a value of $48 million by the end of the next four years. Sun will supply powerful SPARC(R)-based workstations, including the new SPARCstation(TM) 2, and servers to Air Force locations worldwide. For secure computing, Sun will deliver Tempest workstations and its secure operating system. The contract also provides for Sun to supply x-terminals, peripherals, software, maintenance, training and support. Through this contract, Sun will provide the government with sophisticated graphics and tools that will support planning, mapping, analysis and other key applications. Sun will offer training, systems engineering, technical assistance, maintenance and hot-line support for users worldwide. "Our extensive portfolio of products -- including secure computer systems -- and investment in research and development, put us in a strong position to fulfill the Air Force's broad tactical workstation requirements," said Larry Hambly, president of Sun Microsystems Federal. "We see this award as an endorsement of Sun's overall technical and customer support capabilities as well as our open systems philosophy." Sun will include Sun OS(TM), its standard UNIX(R) operating system, and the OPEN LOOK(R) graphical user interface with each SPARC system. All SPARCstation desktop computers and SPARCservers(TM) will utilize the latest in graphics technology and Sun will install and support its NFS(R) file sharing software and other ONC(TM) products. Additionally, C, C++, FORTRAN, Pascal and Ada compilers as well as SunGKS(TM) and SunPHIGS(TM) graphics libraries will be provided.
