---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SPARCstation Receives Japanese Award For Excellence SunFLASH Vol 26 #2 February 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --February 4, 1991-- The best-selling SPARCstation(TM) family of powerful RISC workstations from Sun Microsystems has received the prestigious "Excellent Product Award" from Nikkei, the leading industrial newspaper in Japan. The award was accepted today in Tokyo by Dr. Amo, president of Nihon Sun Microsystems, Sun's Japanese subsidiary. The Sun systems were among 36 winners selected from approximately 14,300 new products and services introduced into the Japanese marketplace in l990. Products from IBM, HP, DEC and Sony were also considered for this award. The SPARCstation was the only non-Japanese product chosen by the judging committee in the computer/telecommunications category. "We consider this a great honor, particularly considering the importance Japan places on quality," noted Scott McNealy, president and CEO of Sun. Sun is the leading workstation vendor in Japan. This is the second time Sun has won a Nikkei award. The company's Sun-4(TM) workstation received the award for creative excellence in 1987. It was the first Sun system based on SPARC(R), a high-performance RISC architecture at the heart of Sun's new SPARCstation family, introduced in 1989 and 1990. The family includes the low-cost SPARCstation SLC, inexpensive color SPARCstation IPC and the recently introduced SPARCstation 2, a graphics workstation.
