---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunOS 4.1.2 SunFLASH Vol 36 #22 December 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - SunOS 4.1.2 includes support for new multiprocessing hardware - Sun QuickCheck functionality incorporated in SunOS 4.1.2 - SunUpgrade feature allows customers to upgrade from SunOS 4.1.1 - Provides single source base by including all features of SunOS 4.1.1 and 4.1.1 Rev B, plus other supplemental software releases - SunOS 4.1.2 ships in December 1991 and becomes the default operating system on January 20, 1992 - OpenWindows Version 3 is copackaged with SunOS 4.1.2 and is the recommended window system; however, OpenWindows Version 2 will be the default SunOS 4.1.2 is Sun's latest release of the industry's premiere operating system. SunOS 4.1.2 provides a stable and proven environment by consolidating all existing supplemental system software releases and allows customers to benefit today from SMCC's multiprocessing hardware without changing their existing applications. It combines the features of SunOS 4.1.1, SunOS 4.1.1 Rev B, GFX patches, and VX/MVX feature tape. SunOS 4.1.2 also provides new features such as a limited upgrade facility from SunOS 4.1.1, integrated Sun QuickCheck functionality and support for the Rock Ridge file system, in addition to over 250 bugfixes. OpenWindows Version 2 is the default windowing system in SunOS 4.1.2, providing a proven development environment and graphical user interface. OpenWindows Version 3 is also provided with SunOS 4.1.2 media orders enabling customers to benefit from Sun's latest windowing product at no additional cost. We encourage customers to move to Version 3 as soon as possible, for it will be the default windowing system in the SVR4-based Solaris 2.0 environment. SunOS 4.1.2 maintains full binary compatibility with SunOS 4.1.1. It also moves customers one step closer to SVR4 by providing an environment that facilitates developing SVR4 compatible applications that conform to all the major industry standards. Integrated Sun QuickCheck Allows fast file system checking upon system reboot Integrated 4.1.1 GFX Rev 2 Eliminates the need to install additional software to support GS, GT, GXplus and SBus 24-bit dumb frame buffer. Integrated VX and MVX support Provides support for Sun's newest graphics visualization products while eliminating the need to install additional software, rebuild the kernel and reboot the system. Rock Ridge file system Provides 25% faster performance than UFS format and conforms to a standard adopted by Rock Ridge Consortium (Sun is a member). OpenWindows Version 2 Included to help with orderly transition to OpenWindows Version 3. OpenWindows Version 3 Provides latest OpenWindows runtime and development environment without purchasing additional software or license. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ SunOS 4.1.2 supports all SPARC platforms including the new SPARCserver 600MP family of products. It will be preinstalled on all desktop SPARCs starting January 20, 1992. Because Sun QuickCheck functionality is included in SunOS 4.1.2, there will be no new release of the Sun QuickCheck product for SunOS 4.1.2. NEED-TO-KNOW FACTS ------------------ - All SPARCserver 600MP configurations require SunOS 4.1.2. - SunOS 4.1.2 is available on CD-ROM only. - SunOS 4.1.2 CD includes binaries for all SPARC platforms. - SunOS 4.1.2 Encryption Kit and source products will be available at the end of January 1992 on CD-ROM only. - The Release Minibox is the only part of the full documentation set that changed to reflect SunOS 4.1.2. - OpenWindows Version 3 CD is copackaged with SunOS 4.1.2 media. - End-user manuals for both OpenWindows Version 2 and Version 3 are included with the Release Minibox. - Contract customers will begin receiving SunOS 4.1.2 after January 20, 1992. ORDERING INFORMATION -------------------- Beginning January 20, 1992 all default part numbers will point to SunOS 4.1.2 and all diskfull desktop SPARCsystems will be preinstalled with SunOS 4.1.2. Prior to January 20, default part numbers will point to SunOS 4.1.1 Rev B and diskfull desktop SPARCs will be preinstalled with SunOS 4.1.1 Rev B. To get SunOS 4.1.2 prior to January 20, you must use the release-specific marketing part number. All SunOS 4.1.2 products (binaries, source, encryption) will be available only on CD-ROM.
