---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunPics Boosts SPARCprinter System Functionality With Software Upgrade SunFLASH Vol 36 #19 December 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWSprint 2.0 Software Lets More Users Take Advantage of SPARCprinter System Features MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- November 19, 1991 -- SunPics(TM), a Sun Microsystems, Inc. business, has significantly increased the versatility of its SPARCprinter(TM) laser printer with the introduction of a software upgrade. The latest version of NeWSprint(TM) software, NeWSprint 2.0, developed by SunPics, makes the high-performance SPARCprinter system available to any user in a heterogeneous networking environment. The 12-page-per-minute print speed of the SPARCprinter system is now accessible from any computer, including Apple(R) Macintosh(R) computers, IBM(R) and compatible PCs, workstations, minicomputers and others. The SPARCprinter laser printer, in conjunction with NeWSprint software, allows raster images to be printed at or near the rated engine speed, saving users time, particularly in printing complex images. "Raster image print speeds can now be measured in pages per minute rather than minutes per page," said SPARCprinter product manager Rob Fellows. With the SPARCprinter system, the page imaging process is handled by powerful SPARC(R) CPUs rather than by slower on-board printer processors, which results in faster imaging and throughput. This in turn has reduced printer costs, because no dedicated CPU or memory is required in the printer. "NeWSprint software makes the SPARCprinter system an even better investment," said William Marr, vice president and general manager of SunPics. "The SPARCprinter has always been the price/performance leader in the laser printer market; now customers can amortize the cost over more users. And as this upgrade demonstrates, customers won't have to replace SPARCprinters to take advantage of new technology -- they just load a new software tape." The SPARCprinter laser printer is equipped with an SBus DMA interface, which provides fast throughput while eliminating the need for special-purpose printer memory and dedicated buffers. The bundled high-speed SBus printer card is compatible with Centronics, with a configurable parallel interface to support a second printer. The SPARCprinter can print at 300 or 400 dpi print resolution. The paper tray is adjustable, and supports letter, legal, A4, B5 and (optionally) B4 trays. The SPARCprinter system, which includes NeWSprint 2.0 software, can be ordered through SunPics, Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. (SMCC), selected resellers, and SunExpress(TM), the Sun Microsystems, Inc. telemarketing business. The suggested retail price is $2695. Purchasers of the SPARCprinter between November 19 and the release date of NeWSprint 2.0 will receive the software upgrade free of charge.
