---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunLink Channel Gateway 7.1 SunFLASH Vol 36 #16 December 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SunLink Channel Gateway available for SPARCserver 600MP Introduction SMCC is making available SunConnect's SunLink Channel Gateway version 7.1, which supports the new series of 600/MP SPARCservers. SunConnect is a Sun Microsystems Incorporated Business. This product allows customers to have multiprocessor system-to-mainframe connectivity over high-speed links. It provides terminal emulation and bulk file transfer (IBM S/370 Block Multiplexor channel protocols) for VM or MVS and is also a platform for MVS/NFS and other 3rd-party applications. Capabilities A single IBM channel can address up to 256 different devices. Up to eight physically separate control units or 16 logically separate control units or sixteen logically separate units can be attached to a channel. A Sun server with a SunLink Channel Gateway can simulate one or more of these control units, up to the maximum allowable number of the channel. If multiple control untis are emulated simultaneously, they can be either of the same or different control unit types. Applications Applications, called control-unit emulations, run on top of the Channel Gateway and provide the control-unit specific gateway functionality. Control-unit emulations can be Sun communication software products, such as SunLink Local 3270 (see the SunLink 3270 gateway Product Brief), or user-developed software packages. Users can develop their own emulations with the SunLink Channel Gateway's application programmatic interface (API). Exchange Feature This feature emulates an IBM Channel-to-Channel Adapter and implements IBM NJE protocol over the SunLink Channel Gateway to provide bulk file transfer, job submission, and interactive user messages. These exchange tools are ideal for Sun/mainframe cross-development. Hardware Components The SunLink Channel Gateway product consists of double VME card slot board assembly, a set of bus and tag interface cables, and Channel Supervisor software. Together, these components allow the host Sun processor to connect to an IBM mainframe block multiplexer channel.
