---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN AND COMPUTER CONSOLES INC. SIGN OEM AGREEMENT SunFLASH Vol 32 #10 August 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPARC Systems Selected as Foundation for Advanced Telecommunications Products MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --August 26, 1991-- Sun Microsystems and Computer Consoles, Inc. (CCI) have signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar agreement under which CCI will integrate and resell Sun(TM) SPARC(R) computers as a platform for its telecommunications applications. The powerful Sun systems will enable CCI to offer greater flexibility to its operator and network services customers worldwide. Sun systems will support CCI's integration of database, call processing and audio subsystems for applications such as directory assistance, toll, intercept and a variety of new voice processing services. The agreement enhances CCI's movement from proprietary to industry-standard platforms, and expands and reinforces Sun's presence in the telecommunications marketplace. Both companies emphasized that the agreement underscores a market shift towards open systems architecture. "We see Sun as a strong business partner and the SPARC/UNIX(R) platform as the right strategic choice to meet our customers' long-term needs," said David Jankowski, CCI's manager of platform products. "The Sun platform rounds out our product line, supporting creation and implementation of sophisticated telecommunications solutions without locking customers into proprietary technology." CCI believes that the Sun platform will meet both current and future needs of the telephone companies that it serves. Many operator and network services tasks -- such as directory assistance, toll and assist (person-to-person or third-party billing calls) and intercept (calls to changed or disconnected numbers) -- have been enhanced or automated with interactive voice processing systems. Future applications will let callers access a wide range of information databases as well as conduct voice, data and image transactions through automated attendants, direct access and operators performing multiple tasks from a single workstation. "CCI is a leader in the telecommunications industry," said Bruce Golden, director of commercial market development at Sun. "Their selection of the Sun platform clearly demonstrates how Sun's products are shaping telecommunications technology, particularly the consolidation of operator services onto the desktop." Sun Microsystems is the world's leading supplier of client/server computing solutions, which feature networked workstations and servers that store, process and distribute information. Used for many demanding commercial and technical applications, Sun's products command the largest share of the computer industry's fastest-growing market segment: workstations and servers. The company, founded in 1982 and headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a multibillion dollar corporation doing business worldwide. CCI founded in 1968 and headquartered in Rochester, New York, supplies high-quality integrated database, voice processing, call processing and workstation systems to the telecommunications industry.
