---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash RAD Technologies assembles a line of 30 desktop applications. SunFLASH Vol 32 #7 August 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a non-Sun announcement from jmorgan@rad.com (Jeff Morgan). -johnj ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- RAD Technologies To Deliver UNIX Applications On CD-ROM MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 15, 1991 -- RAD Technologies, Inc. today announced the availability of over 30 leading commercial UNIX applications via CD-ROM (see attached). Based on a proprietary interface technology called CD-ROM Integrated Desktop (CDID*), the new distribution channel for UNIX desktop applications utilizes Postscript*, X/Window* and the RockRidge/ISO 9660 CD-ROM data format standard. Among the applications listed in Technology Release 2.0, a printed information companion to the CD-ROM disk CDID volume 1, are leading desktop publishing, project management, data analysis, and office automation programs. All RAD applications take full advantage of the RISC workstation performance, UNIX networking, high-resolution graphic displays, multi-tasking, and window-based user interfaces. By allowing complete evaluation of sophisticated UNIX applications on the customer's own hardware, CDID volume 1 helps users and managers make well-informed purchasing decisions. "RAD has developed an easy-to-use graphical CD-ROM interface that greatly simplifies the process of obtaining and evaluating the latest UNIX applications," said J. Jeffrey Morgan, president of RAD Technologies. "Customers can browse, sample, evaluate, and load applications directly from CD-ROM onto their workstations, free of charge. Product tutorials, rolling demonstrations, and on-line product documentation are also included for review," Morgan explained. Desktop applications on CDID volume 1 are fully functional (with save and print disabled), and customers desiring to purchase one or more of the applications can activate all functionality be merely calling 800-2 GET RAD to obtain a password. "In addition to the two years RAD has invested in developing the CD-ROM interface, we have also organized a knowledgeable UNIX sales and application engineering staff to provide the highest level of direct customer support," said Morgan. "Success in this emerging market will require new standards of delivery and technical support, particularly for distributed network applications, and international localization." "UNIX is expanding from the engineering lab into the mainstream commercial marketplace," said Dennis Ohryn, former vice president of worldwide field operations at Sun Microsystems, and recently appointed to the RAD Technologies board of directors. "The next generation of UNIX workstations and servers will become the backbone for new global corporate networks, providing major performance and productivity gains," Ohryn predicted. In addition to UNIX software distribution, RAD also provides software publishing, marketing services and sales support for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) throughout the world. The company offers a range of corporate services, including CD-ROM and network based information services, databases, application training, and engineering. In a move to establish a single point of sales and support for the entire client/server workstation environment -- both for technical and corporate applications - RAD Technologies also recently announced a UNIX software distribution alliance with AVCOM Systems, Inc., of Palo Alto, California. The joint marketing and business development agreement combines AVCOM's strength and experience as a leader in UNIX systems integration for technology environments with RAD Technologies' CD-ROM-based sales channel and corporate services for commercial UNIX desktop applications. RAD Technologies develops, markets, and supports a wide range of client-server desktop applications software for business and professional use, as well as CD-ROM and network information services for the distributed computing marketplace. Founded in 1990, the privately held company is headquartered in Mountain View, California.
