---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Concurrent Access To Both A PC-NFS and NetWare LAN SunFLASH Vol 32 #6 August 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a reference to a third party product from a private email message. As you would expect, this description does not imply an endorsement by Sun. -johnj ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is now a product available to provide PCs with concurrent access to both a PC-NFS and NetWare LAN. Spry Concurrent, developed by Spry Inc., provides an NDIS driver for NetWare; PC-NFS 3.5 ships an NDIS driver. This product eliminates the need to reboot to access different LANs, and does not require a "smart" ethernet adapter, which can be costly. Both UDP/TCP (PC-NFS) and IPX (NetWare) can coexist on the same ethernet adapter board using the NDIS driver supplied by the manufacturer of the board. The introduction of PC-NFS 3.5 stated that the NDIS driver is delivered to provide compatibility with most available ethernet cards, NOT to provide dual protocol coexistance. In fact, the dual protocol coexistance is not marketed by Sun and Sun does not formally provide software support for it, but the necessary NDIS executables are included. Below is the product and ordering information for Spry Concurrent. NOTES: * PC-NFS 3.5a, which includes a patches for NDIS.SYS and NET.EXE is required for compatibility with Spry Concurrent. The NDIS.SYS patch corrects a problem with loading PC-NFS and NetWare simultaneously, and the NET.EXE patch corrects a problem with the NET PRINT command. These patch are available from CTE (Patch number xxxx). TECHNICAL RESTRICTIONS AND CONSIDERATIONS: * Having both stacks (IPX and TCP/UDP) loaded in PC memory simultaneously will decrease the amount of standard DOS memory available (in the 640K limit). Also, performance will be effected. * PC-NFS must be started and all drives and printers mounted AFTER the Spry IPX has been loaded and NETBIND run but BEFORE the Novell NET3/NET4 shell is started. * Netware can use ONLY drives W, X Y and Z; it is not possible to change the LASTDRIVE to affect this. LASTDRIVE=V is mandatory. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
