---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Running Macintosh Applications Via X-Windows SunFLASH Vol 32 #5 August 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a non-Sun announcement from qualix!vision!jkovacs@uunet.UU.NET (Jean Kovacs) -johnj ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- XPort turns your Apple Macintosh into an X-window system client and lets you run your Macintosh and Mac applications from your workstation or X-terminal. You no longer need to get up and walk over to the Mac to use it. XPort lets you log into your Mac over the net from any X-workstation or X-terminal. The Mac is actually running the applications, but the Mac screen is displayed in a window on your workstation and your keyboard and mouse operate it. Adding XPort to your X-windows environment now makes it possible to execute all Macintosh O/S applications (such as Excel, Hypercard, Microsoft Word, etc.) from any X-workstation or X-terminal. With the wide variety of low-cost graphic, word processing, and CAD applications available for the Macintosh, XPort vastly extends the applications available for your X-workstations. Network Configuration: Network access to XPort can be accomplished from any workstation (Sun, DEC, HP, etc.) which supports X-windows over TCP/IP on Ethernet. In addition, XPort can be accessed via an AppleTalk LAN Bridge to Ethernet. XPort Features: o The only X-windows system client available for the native Macintosh operating system o Allows any X-server workstation user to execute Macintosh applications o Lets users cut and paste text between X and Macintosh applications o Conforms to all releases of the X-windows system software o Supports MOTIF, DEC Windows, and OpenLook Window Managers. o Supports the Macintosh's local/network printers and disks o Supports Apple's MacTCP networking software XPort License: XPort is priced at $495. Each Macintosh computer that uses XPort software must be properly licensed. With this single license, workstation and X-terminals on the network can access the Mac. System Requirements: XPort supports the Macintosh PLUS, Macintosh/SE family, and the Macintosh II family. Qualix recommends a Macintosh computer with 2MB or more of memory. Apple's Macintosh Version 5.0 System Tools (or a later version) is supported. Questions and Answers: Q. Is this a Mac emulation product? A. No, XPort does not emulate the Mac. It duplicates the Mac screen, keyboard, and mouse controls at the Sun workstation. In this way, XPort allows you to share access to a network-connected Macintosh. Q. Who should consider this product? A. We have found that the customers who benefit the most from XPort are those who have workstations or X terminals and need to run specific Mac applications. By putting one or more Macs on the network with XPort, users can now access the Macs over the network to run applications at their workstation or X terminal. Q. How many workstations can access the Mac? A. As long as the workstation is on the network with a Mac and XPort, it can access the Mac and its applications. However, only ONE WORKSTATION AT A TIME can use the Mac. Q. Can I now use Persuasion (tm) and other popular Mac applications on my workstation? A. Yes! With XPort, you actually are running the programs on the Mac (although you use them at your workstation). This means you can access any of the programs on the Mac. Q. What Mac Operating System does XPort work with? A. Mac System 5.0 or later, including System 7. Q. Who is Qualix? A.
