The demonstration showed prototypes of a recently completed technical specification which allows front-end clients and database servers to work together. "This is the first step towards universal database interoperability," said Roger Sippl, chairman of the SQL Access Group. "The significance of today's demonstration is that database users will be able to tap the full potential of their computer systems by giving them access to any database on a network with equal ease." 32.03 PC/NFS Solutions Guide PC/NFS Solutions Guide Many Sun offices have recently received copies of the above document. This article consists of the Introduction, Preface and table of contents for the above document. In the US, local Sun offices can be found via the 1-800-USA-4-SUN number. -johnj In a world where companies face an increasing combination of different hardware architectures, operating systems, and software applications, network connectivity is more important than ever before. Networking disparate systems together and making operations transparent to users presents special challenges to most businesses. 32.04 Elan License Manager (TM) Release 1.4 This is a non-Sun announcement from marcia@elan.com (Marcia Alarcon). This month I will be posting 10 or 11 third party articles as separate articles instead of a couple of third party articles with multiple announcements (digests). I would like to hear if (a) you think that Sun-related articles are of value and (b) if they are better included as separate articles or digests. Elan License Manager (TM) Release 1.4 for UNIX(TM) Software Licensing Mountain View, California -- July 24, 1991--Elan Computer Group, one of the pioneers in floating license software for UNIX-based software, has announced the availability of a new release of their Elan License Manager. Release 1.4 offers additional functionality important to customers, including shorter key lengths, (as short as 11 characters), easier installation, and the ability to nodelock certain licenses to individual CPUs. In addition, there are several new features that are sure to make supporting this licensing program easier for individual developers. 32.05 Running Macintosh Apps Via X-Windows This is a non-Sun announcement from qualix!vision!jkovacs@uunet.UU.NET (Jean Kovacs) -johnj XPort turns your Apple Macintosh into an X-window system client and lets you run your Macintosh and Mac applications from your workstation or X-terminal. You no longer need to get up and walk over to the Mac to use it. XPort lets you log into your Mac over the net from any X-workstation or X-terminal. The Mac is actually running the applications, but the Mac screen is displayed in a window on your workstation and your keyboard and mouse operate it. 32.06 Concurrent Access To Both A PC-NFS and NetWare LAN This is a reference to a third party product from a private email message. As you would expect, this description does not imply an endorsement by Sun. -johnj There is now a product available to provide PCs with concurrent access to both a PC-NFS and NetWare LAN. Spry Concurrent, developed by Spry Inc., provides an NDIS driver for NetWare; PC-NFS 3.5 ships an NDIS driver. This product eliminates the need to reboot to access different LANs, and does not require a "smart" ethernet adapter, which can be costly. Both UDP/TCP (PC-NFS) and IPX (NetWare) can coexist on the same ethernet adapter board using the NDIS driver supplied by the manufacturer of the board. 32.07 RAD Technologies assembles a line of 30 desktop applications. This is a non-Sun announcement from jmorgan@rad.com (Jeff Morgan). -johnj RAD Technologies To Deliver UNIX Applications On CD-ROM MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 15, 1991 -- RAD Technologies, Inc. today announced the availability of over 30 leading commercial UNIX applications via CD-ROM (see attached). Based on a proprietary interface technology called CD-ROM Integrated Desktop (CDID*), the new distribution channel for UNIX desktop applications utilizes Postscript*, X/Window* and the RockRidge/ISO 9660 CD-ROM data format standard. Among the applications listed in Technology Release 2.0, a printed information companion to the CD-ROM disk CDID volume 1, are leading desktop publishing, project management, data analysis, and office automation programs. All RAD applications take full advantage of the RISC workstation performance, UNIX networking, high-resolution graphic displays, multi-tasking, and window-based user interfaces. By allowing complete evaluation of sophisticated UNIX applications on the customer's own hardware, CDID volume 1 helps users and managers make well-informed purchasing decisions. 32.08 Sun's Fourth Quarter/Fiscal Year Results Sun Microsystems Announces Record Fourth Quarter And Annual Results MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- August 8, 1991 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc.
