---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun Establishes Subsidiaries In Finland, Belgium And Brazil SunFLASH Vol 28 #12 April 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --April 17, 1991-- Sun Microsystems has established three new subsidiaries in Finland, Belgium and Brazil that will allow the company to provide sales, service and marketing support directly to its customers. With these additions, Sun now has a total of 10 subsidiaries in Europe and its first wholly-owned subsidiary in Latin America. The new Brazilian subsidiary underscores the rapid increase in sales of Sun's UNIX(R)-based workstations outside of Europe and the United States. With Europe contributing approximately 30 percent to Sun's overall revenues, adding subsidiaries in Belgium and Finland further supports Sun's growth in this important region. The new Belgian subsidiary, located in Brussels, will commence operations on July 1. BIM s.a./n.v., Sun's partner in that region, will continue operations as Sun's main distribution channel to education, government and large industrial accounts. Sun Microsystems Belgium will be headed by Lieven Jaspaert, who comes to Sun from BIM, where he was vice president of sales. Hannu Alen has been named country manager of Sun Microsystems Oy in Espoo, Finland. The new subsidiary will focus not only on promoting Sun's products in its traditional markets, such as CASE and CAD/CAM, but will also target markets in the commercial sector, including financial services and publishing. Full operations commenced on January 1, 1991. The formation of Sun Microsystems do Brasil Industria e Comercio Ltda will extend local support for Sun's large Brazilian installed base. In addition, the local staff will work with Sun's distributor and partner, Scopus Tecnologia S/A, to extend penetration of Sun products into vertical markets, such as mapping, finance, office automation, software engineering and telecommunications. Sun is the leading supplier of UNIX-based workstations in this region. Luciano N. Dolenc has been named director and general manager of the new subsidiary, which is located in Sao Paolo.
