---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Transport Independent RPC Now Freely Available Via The Internet SunFLASH Vol 28 #4 April 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TI-RPC source is on titan.rice.edu. It is in the /incoming directory: file: tirpcsrc.tar.Z. Size is about 1.1 Mb. -johnj ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun has posted the latest version of its Remote Procedure Call technology to internet archives. Any software developer or systems vendor may make use of the RPC libraries or port the code to other systems without incurring license fees or royalty charges. The new RPC, known as Transport-Independent RPC, or TI RPC, is compatible with the existing ONC RPC but permits applications to be insulated from the underlying network transports. This means that, for example, applications written for TCP/IP networks will run unmodified over OSI-based networks, thereby greatly easing the migration from today's standards to emerging OSI standards. The version posted to the net will run on SunOS 4.1 and should also compile without major modification on any System V platform which supports the Transport Layer Interface (TLI). TI-RPC is already shipped as part of UNIX System V Release 4--however, the version Sun has posted to the internet includes an asynchronous RPC feature, currently not present in the SVR4 version. To run on non-SVR4 systems, TI RPC requires a TLI or X/Open Transport Interface (XTI) interface. These are not provided by Sun although Sun has included with the source a patch needed to run TI-RPC on SunOS 4.1. The TI RPC source code, which includes full documentation and sample programs, as well as an enhanced rpcgen code generator, can be downloaded from titan.rice.edu in the incoming directory. It has been posted as a compressed tar file, tirpcsrc.tar.Z. This code is provided by Sun as is with no support or warranties of any kind. Sun will also provide TI-RPC on tape for the cost of media and shipping.
