SUNFLASH ! ---------- Sunflash is an electronic mail news service from Sun Microsystems, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Please address comments to John McLaughlin (sun!sunvice!johnj or johnmclaughlin@sun.COM). (305) 776-7770 FOR Your Information -------------------- This is second hand information from an internal Sun email in response to a question on how to connect multiple serial devices to a machine such as a 3/60. This product announcement in no way implies an endorsement by Sun etc. etc. -johnj ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Serial Port Multiplexor For Sun Workstations -------------------------------------------- (from another Sun employee ...) The fellow I spoke with at the Sun Expo is Mark Baker. He's the Vice-President of Vector. Tell him Todd sent you!!! :^) His # is 602-741-0120. Mark said the VPX-127 sells for $1,495. Here's the information I have. It came from Vector's glossy.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Vector Technologies VPX-127 Multiplexer" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Function Description: The VPX-127 multiplexer connects up to seven serial devices to each port on a Sun workstation. This allows users of Sun workstations to expand their current Sun configurations to add on peripheral devices. Standard UNIX baud rates of 50 to 38,400 baud can be specified for each port. Each port fully supports XON/XOFF flow control. The multiplexer firmware automatically gathers characters together until 50 mSecs expires between characters or a packet is filled. Using a fast auto-repeat key on terminals does not send data until the auto-repeat key is unpressed, or the multiplexer fills a packet. Baud rates, data packet sizes and flow control can be set for each individual port. Physical Description: The VPX-127 multiplexer consists of two modules: a control unit consisting of one printed circuit board with eight DB20/RS-232 connectors and a power connector, and one power supply unit. It receives all configuration information, including the port-0 line speed, from the Multiplexer daemon on the host. Standad Features: The VPX-127 multiplexer allows you to: 1) Attach up to 7 different devices to each port of the Sun workstation, for a total of 14 devices. [on a 2 serial port system, using two VPX-127's ---todd] 2) Define different baud rates for each port. 3) Define the baud rate between the Sun workstation and the VPX-127. 4) Define the size of data packets exchanged between the Sun workstation and the VPX-127. 5) Enable flow control using XON/XOFF for attached devices. 6) Connect dial-in/dial-out modems. The VPX-127 comes with software to be loaded and executed on the host Sun workstation. This software provides automatic device configuration which should satisfy most requirements, However, should the need arise to change the default device assignments, the software allows such modification.
