Why CD-ROM? CD-ROM provides in excess of 550 Megabytes of data per disc, equivalent to more than 200,000 typed pages of 500 standard books, with the added advantages that the data are completely immune to attempts to write to the disc and the discs are practically indestructible. Utilizing some of this space for detailed indices permits access to any set of information from all 200,000 pages of data with an average transfer rate of 154 Kbytes per second and a maximum of 1400 Kbytes per second. A side benefit of data in disc form is a protected environment from future comtamination of any unwanteed guest (such as a worm or virus). When using an industry standard costing of approximately $10.00 per Mbyte of hard disk storage space each CD-ROM disc becomes and increasingly cost effective manner of data and software archival. CD-ROM Driver for Sun Workstations Young Minds, Incorporated, offers the ability to mount High Sierra/ISO 9660 format CD-ROM discs as virtual file systems on Sun workstations. This eliminates the need to consume large amounts of hard disk space to hold source code. Using symbolic links, the code can be compiled directly off the CD-ROM. Only executable, system-specific, system-modified, or user-modified files need reside on the hard disk during compilation. ISO 9660 requires all file names to be stored using only upper case characters. Since this is an uncommon practice on Unix Systems, as a partial improvement all characters are converted to lower case by the driver. To allow for the ISO 9660 restrictions, and still retain the original full Unix filenames and directory on our discs. These, and a simple program or shell script, can be used to symbolically reconstruct the original disk image in a manner transparent to the system. The driver operates on Sun-3 or Sun-4 workstations running SunOS 4.0 or 4.0.1. CD-ROM drives suing a SCSI interface and the SCSI-2 core command set are supported, such as the Toshiba XM-3201 or XM-5100, or the Sony CDU-6111. Young Minds provides complete subsystems including CD-ROM drive, cable, Sun CD-ROM driver.
