Accepting the award at a banquet at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel was Scott McNealy, president of Sun. To qualify for an "E" award, a company must show evidence of a substantial increase in volume of exports over a four-year period. The company should also demonstrate breakthroughs in especially competitive markets, introduce a new product into U.S. export trade or open a new market. According to McNealy, Sun has participated in overseas markets almost since the company was founded in 1982. In l984, international sales represented 8 percent of Sun's revenues, which grew to 42 percent by the end of the 1989 fiscal year. Sun reported revenues of $1.765 billion for its fiscal year l989 which ended June 30. The President's "E" Award was created by executive order of the President in l961 to recognize persons, firms or organizations that contribute significantly to increasing U.S. exports. The award is meant to encourage efforts to improve the nation's balance of payments through expansion of export trade. The "E" stands for exports as well as expansion, excellence and effort, explained Dan Sullivan, chairman of the awards committee. "U.S. companies like Sun Microsystems that dig in and do the hard work of building up an export business are making a major contribution to the nation," stated Sullivan. "To receive this highly regarded award sends out the message to every American firm that exports represent a sales frontier almost without limit -- as Sun is demonstrating so well," he added. Other Northern California-based companies that have won the award in recent years include Wells Fargo Bank, Memorex and Daisy Systems. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### UNIX is a registered trademark of AT&T.
