It allows Sun computers and IBM System/370-compatible mainframes to exchange files and messages as well as to submit jobs and commands. SunLink Channel Gateway facilitates both interactive and batch information transfer. It allows multiple IBM device emulators, such as SunLink Local 3270, to be connected to Sun systems and makes it possible for customers to develop their own emulators. SunLink is part of SunNet(TM), Sun's integrated family of networking and data communication products. As with other SunLink products, SunLink Channel Gateway preserves hardware investments by enabling users to connect high-performance Sun workstations to existing computer equipment. SunLink Channel Gateway will be useful for customers with computer-aided design or statistical programs who need to interactively share information between central mainframe files and individual workstations. Customers with distributed databases that must be updated in a batch format can also utilize SunLink Channel Gateway. In addition, those who use workstations for mainframe software development will benefit from the product. SunLink Channel Gateway is compatible with both the MVS and VM operating systems and supports a window-based or a command line interface. It supports IBM's NJE (Network Job Entry) protocol over a channel-attached link. SunLink Channel Gateway is priced at $20,000 (U.S. list) for a single unit. This includes the channel board set, the programming interface and NJE support. SunLink Channel Gateway resides in a Sun server; one can support a virtually unlimited number of Sun clients. It will be available in the first quarter of 1990.
