The new High-speed Serial Interface (HSI) is part of the SunNet(TM) family of networking and data communication products, which implement recognized networking standards. The VME board and software that make up HSI provide a simple, cost-effective solution to enlarging networks over wide areas. HSI delivers the high-speed connectivity necessary to bring distributed computing applications to geographically separate Sun workgroups. Traditionally, the connections between local area networks (LANs) have slowed down overall network communication. HSI helps users utilize the increasing speed of LANs by enabling Sun networks to be connected at 1.544 megabits per second with standard T1 lines, or at 2.048 megabits per second with standard CEPT lines. Two Sun processors can work together to connect up to four T1 lines for even higher-speed communication between local workgroups. This makes possible much higher-performance wide area inter-network routing than was available in the past from Sun. HSI is installed in a Sun workstation or server. It has two ports and can support up to two T1 or CEPT lines, depending on the speed and configuration of the host machine. It does not require a dedicated host, so that the workstation or server can perform other tasks while connecting to T-1 or CEPT lines. In conjunction with other SunNet products, which support Ethernet, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), X.25 and slower network speeds, HSI makes Sun systems a flexible interconnection solution for a heterogeneous networking environment. HSI is priced at $6,000 (U.S. list) and is available immediately for both Sun-3(TM) and VME-based SPARC(TM) systems.
