INTEL SELECTS SUN386i WORKSTATIONS AS DESIGN PLATFORM Systems To Be Used To Design New-Generation ICs MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--February 21, 1989-- Sun Microsystems today announced that Intel Corp. has signed a multi-million dollar agreement to purchase its Sun386i(TM) workstations for use in the microcomputer component manufacturer's circuit design department. The agreement covers the purchase of several hundred workstations during the next two years. The Sun386i workstations will be used for design engineering and internal development of new generations of integrated circuits. Intel currently has a comprehensive internal computer-aided engineering and design environment that is comprised of mainframe computers and minicomputer systems with a sophisticated proprietary software environment. According to Dr. Albert Yu, Intel's vice president and general manager of components development, the company initiated a formal evaluation more than one year ago to find a standard desktop workstation environment. "After evaluating several vendors' products, Intel committed to the Sun386i as its desktop solution because it offered the best mix of integration of a UNIX(R) workstation with MS-DOS(R) operating system compatibility, based on the Intel386(TM) microprocessor. We believe the Sun386i is an excellent fit in our CAD environment," said Dr. Yu. Available in configurations exceeding 3 MIPS (Sun386i/150) and 5 MIPS (Sun386i/250), the products set a new standard for ease of use. The Sun386i workstation integrates heterogeneous networking, high-resolution graphics, multi-user and multi-tasking window operating and compatibility with all mainstream MS-DOS applications. Intel manufactures microcomputer components, modules and systems. Sun Microsystems, Inc. is one of the world's leading suppliers of network-based distributed computer systems, including professional workstations, servers, and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### Press contact: John Loiacono 415/336-6424
