PROFESSIONAL CADAM ADDED TO SUN'S GROWING PORTFOLIO OF MECHANICAL CAE/CAD/CAM SOLUTIONS Strong Endorsement of Sun's Open Systems Philosophy MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.,--February 21, 1989-- With the addition today of PROFESSIONAL CADAM for its Sun-4(TM) workstation family, Sun Microsystems continues to provide the mechanical CAE/CAD/CAM community with the broadest portfolio of UNIX(R)-based application solutions. CADAM's introduction of a hardware-independent version of its industry leading software marks the first time that its products have been available for UNIX workstations. Because of CADAM's prevalence in automotive, aerospace and manufacturing industries worldwide, PROFESSIONAL CADAM is an important product for Sun in the U.S., Europe and Japan. "We consider CADAM's strategy of providing a UNIX-based solution for multi-vendor, heterogenous CAE/CAD/CAM environments a strong endorsement of Sun's open systems and industry standards philosophy," said Scott McNealy, president of Sun Microsystems. "Sales of PROFESSIONAL CADAM seats could represent some $75 million in Sun sales over the next three years," continued McNealy. Unique Relationship While PROFESSIONAL CADAM is available for several UNIX workstations, Sun offers a broader range of RISC technology, networking capabilities and distribution channels. PROFESSIONAL CADAM is aimed at users of Sun-4/150 CXP and 4/260 CXP graphics workstations, both based on the company's SPARC (scalable processor architecture) RISC microprocessor. Software development was completed using SunOS(TM) Release 4.0. As a result, PROFESSIONAL CADAM can be adopted easily to future SPARC offerings. Sun offers superior connectivity for PROFESSIONAL CADAM users through its range of networking services and protocols, including its ONC/NFS(TM) (Open Network Computing/Network File System) standard. ONC/NFS enables users to link disparate systems--such as workstations and mainframes--into the corporate networks they demand. This is especially important to CADAM users who have exisiting mainframe installations. Sun's connectivity solutions were recently expanded with the creation of MVS/NFS, a joint development of Sun and Electronic Data Systems (EDS), bringing the functionality of NFS to IBM's MVS mainframe environment. With MVS/NFS, any computer supporting NFS, from PCs to supercomputers, will have high-speed transparent access to information residing in IBM or compatible mainframes. PROFESSIONAL CADAM for Sun workstations will be sold by CADAM's direct sales force and through combined Sun/CADAM VARs. Sun has more than 150 VARs throughout the country. Many of these VARs will resell Sun/CADAM solutions. CADAM, INC, a Lockheed Company, has developed a complete family of integrated CAE/CAD/CAM software packages suitable for various hardware platforms. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is one of the world's leading suppliers of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX
