-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HITACHI LICENSES SUN'S NETWORKING TECHNOLOGY SunFLASH Vol 12 #6 December 1989 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun's NFS Will Be Supported on Hitachi Mainframes MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --December 12, 1989-- Sun Microsystems and Hitachi, Ltd., today signed an agreement under which Hitachi will license Sun's Open Network Computing/Network File System (ONC/NFS(TM)) technology for implementation on Hitachi's mainframe computers. ONC/NFS will allow Hitachi systems to operate in mixed-vendor computer networks by sharing files and resources. Hitachi will develop a sophisticated version of ONC/NFS for its large-scale, non-UNIX(R) operating system used on its mainframes worldwide. "Sun welcomes Hitachi to the community of ONC vendors," said Ed Zander, Sun vice president of corporate marketing. "More than 280 organizations have licensed ONC/NFS, making it the most widely installed set of networking protocols in the industry. Sun is pleased to see ONC/NFS's continued acceptance outside the UNIX marketplace -- especially within the mainframe environment." Hitachi's mainframes are frequently part of global computer networks. "Our expertise in mainframe technology, coupled with Sun's networking capabilities, assure a sophisticated mainframe product offering," said Atsu Kimura, general manager of Hitachi's Marketing and Product Planning Division, Computer, Telecommunications & Office Systems Group. The company is known for the advanced software capabilities it offers to customers, he added. NFS is the best-known member of Sun's Open Network Computing product family. ONC also contains a platform and tools for building highly sophisticated services that extend over an entire network. With these tools, users can develop additional network services and distributed applications. ONC is a component of SunNet(TM), Sun's comprehensive family of networking products for distributed workgroup computing. Today, more than 90 systems vendors are currently delivering technology based on Sun's ONC/NFS platform, including IBM, Digital Equipment Corp., HP/Apollo and Data General. Hitachi, Ltd., is one of the world's largest electronics and electrical equipment manufacturers, with operations extending to computers, semiconductors, consumer products, power generating equipment and industrial machinery. The company, founded in 1910, had annual sales of $48.5 billion (Y6,401,417 million) in its 1988 fiscal year and employed 274,508 employees worldwide. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### ONC/NFS is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
