-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN WORKSTATIONS CHOSEN BY PARIS-BASED BROKERAGE HOUSE SunFLASH Vol 12 #5 December 1989 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--December 12, 1989-- The Tuffier Group, a Paris-based brokerage house, has selected Sun386i(TM) workstations for its new trading floor, which specializes in the interest rate instruments market. Effix Systems, a French systems integrator, equipped Tuffier's trading room with 60 Sun386i workstations and four Sun-3/280(TM) servers running advanced decision support software developed by Effix. An additional 40 workstations will most probably be added to the network in 1990, Tuffier reported. The new workstations allow a trader to consolidate digital financial information from three external data suppliers -- Reuters, Telerate and Fininfo -- on a single display. Using Effix software, traders can perform real-time analyses and calculations on this data and incorporate it into spreadsheets or display it in high-resolution charts and graphs. In addition, traders can be alerted to previously specified key words or phrases that appear in news feeds through a unique facility within the software. The Sun workstations replace video-based systems that displayed information in conventional video (read only) format on several different screens. The previous system did not allow traders to perform sophisticated decision-making analyses. Each Sun386i Model 150 is equipped with four megabytes of memory and uses the SunView(TM) window system. Sun's windowing environment allows traders to simultaneously access information from multiple sources and to display relevant data in color charts and graphs. The Sun systems demonstrate the model of computing for the 90s -- workgroup computing, based on "clients" that consist of powerful desktop systems connected to servers that store and manipulate information. According to M. Letouzey, data processing manager for Tuffier, the primary reasons for choosing the Sun/Effix solution were the user- friendly windowing capability, the optimal distribution of data over the network and the ease with which new systems can be integrated into the existing network. Besides offering Tuffier superior performance/price, the Sun386i solution uniquely met its need for an advanced workstation that could run both UNIX(R) and MS DOS applications concurrently. The Sun386i systems are the first workstations to fully merge the power of the UNIX operating system while giving access to the wealth of DOS software available today.
