Mclaughlin, Publisher & Editor - flash@sun.com ____________________________________________________________________________ 70.10 SMCC and Oracle Unveil Joint Enterprise Client-Server Program Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC) and Oracle Corporation have created the Enterprise Client-Server Program, which simplifies the purchase, implementation and maintenance of mission-critical, client-server database applications using products from SMCC and Oracle. The alliance takes advantage of the companies' enterprise computing expertise and long-standing relationship to provide comprehensive client-server implementations and single-point support for mission-critical applications. The areas covered are: new products, product quality testing, performance tuning, comprehensive customer support, consulting services and customer centers. Starting during product development, SMCC and Oracle work closely together to test products, ensuring reliability and performance. New products within the program include: the new SPARCcluster(TM) PDB servers, highly scalable, highly available clustered systems; Diamond, integrated enterprise management software; and high-performance Oracle Parallel Backup and Restore software. As part of the cooperative effort, SunIntegration, a business unit of SunService, and Oracle Consulting will team to provide "one stop shopping" for selected solutions that will include third-party products as well as Sun(R) and Oracle(R) hardware and software. SunIntegration and Oracle intend to add additional comprehensive bundled solutions to SunIntegration's price list, giving customers a single point of contact. SMCC and Oracle will open two customer centers, one in the San Francisco Bay Area and one in Europe. The centers will be staffed by trained SMCC and Oracle engineers and used for benchmarking, integration, configuration and capacity planning and demonstrations. The U.S. center will open by the end of 1994. To ensure continued integration and optimization of Sun and Oracle products, Oracle will work with SMCC in the development of the next generation of Sun cluster systems supporting parallel database transactions across clusters of up to 160 processors. Also, the companies have created a specialized performance lab where more than 15 SMCC and Oracle engineers work on performance tuning for "real-world" applications. At the lab, they've achieved an 19.3x speedup on a 20-way SMP configuration from parallel applications and have increased on line backup to 20 gigabytes per hour. Finally, Oracle and SunSoft have begun a comprehensive object technology exchange that will support NIS+ in Oracle Naming Service. Oracle will expand its support for major gateway technologies for the Solaris(R) environment by December 1994. SMCC and Oracle support teams work together, giving customers a single point of contact and seamless frontline and backline support. Currently, Oracle databases are running on Sun servers in major businesses, including Dunlop Tire Corp, Eastman Kodak, Citibank, N.A., Fidelity Investments and Unit Trust of India. The largest client-server database installation in the world is a Sun/Oracle solution used by Fingerhut Cos., a multimedia direct marketing company based in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC), the world's top supplier of open network computing solutions, is a division of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Built on Sun's legacy of "The Network is the Computer," SMCC's SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) workstation and server family leads the UNIX(R) market.
