Mclaughlin, Publisher & Editor - flash@sun.com ____________________________________________________________________________ 70.08 SPARCcluster 1000 PDB & SPARCcluster 2000 PDB Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC) unveiled a new line of database clustered servers that provide a highly scalable, highly available platform for mission-critical database applications. The SPARCcluster(TM) 1000 PDB(TM) and the SPARCcluster(TM) 2000 PDB(TM) servers address key customer requirements, including access to shared databases, ensured data integrity despite failures and fully automated failure detection and recovery mechanisms. Future scalability of up to eight nodes ensures long-term protection of customer investments. The first application to be supported will be Oracle(R) Parallel Server software. NEW SUN PARALLEL DATABASE SERVERS DELIVER LEADING PERFORMANCE AND AVAILABILITY FOR MISSION-CRITICAL APPLICATIONS The SPARCcluster PDB servers offer three unique advantages over competing database cluster solutions. The servers deliver better performance scalability by using the industry's first multithreaded lock manager to speed shared access to disk storage through multiprocessing. The servers also use the SPARCstorage(TM)Array disk subsystem to deliver both lower mass storage costs and faster disk I/O performance. In addition, SPARCcluster PDB servers provide the most comprehensive suite of on-line cluster management software for simpler centralized control of cluster resources. No single point of failure hardware, software or network can bring the cluster down. The SPARCcluster PDB servers feature redundant data paths between all nodes to all disk subsystems and to all external networks to support high availability. SMCC's fault management software detects all failures and manages the recovery process without operator intervention in a manner that preserves database integrity. Failed components in the cluster can be replaced on line, without impacting database availability. A SPARCcluster PDB server includes at least two systems (a SPARCserver(TM) 1000E or a SPARCcenter(TM) 2000E), two or more SPARCstorage Array highly available disk subsystems with redundant fibre channel host connections, a cluster management console, SPARCcluster PDB software and SPARCcluster support services package. Oracle Parallel Server The first parallel database product available on the SPARCcluster PDB server is the Oracle Parallel Server from Oracle Corporation. Built on a shared disk architecture, the Oracle product works in conjunction with SMCC's lock manager and provides shared concurrent access to disks across multiple nodes. With Oracle Parallel Server, customers can access a single image of the database, supporting both on-line transaction processing and decision support applications. The SPARCcluster PDB servers will support future parallel database products as they become available from companies such as Informix and Sybase. The two-node configurations of the SPARCcluster 1000 PDB and SPARCcluster 2000 PDB servers will be available in the first quarter of 1995. Entry-level SPARCcluster 1000 PDB servers start at $387,025 for a fully functional cluster, while entry-level SPARCcluster 2000 PDB servers start at $693,175.
