Online: DiskSuite 3.0 will replace Online: DiskSuite 2.0.1 for all Solaris 2 environments. Online: DiskSuite 1.0 will remain the only logical volume management software that SMCC offers for use with Solaris 1 environments. Online: DiskSuite 3.0 is a logical volume management software product, designed to improve the availability and manageability of data. It is designed for use in Solaris 2 environments and supports the following capabilities: o UFS logging (file system journaling) to speed file system recovery upon reboot, a feature which can significantly decrease the time it takes to recover from a system crash o Improved synchronous write performance, including NFS write performance, for UNIX(R) file systems o Disk mirroring (RAID 1) for improved data availability and fully transparent recovery from disk failures o Data striping (RAID 0) across disks and controllers for higher I/O throughput o Hot sparing with automatic data resynchronization, a feature which, upon disk failure, can be used to quickly restore a fully mirrored environment without operator intervention o On-line file system growth so that file system size can be easily adjusted to accommodate rapidly growing environments o Support for the creation and extension of UNIX file systems larger than 2 GB Beginning with Solaris 2.4, SMCC will bundle Online: DiskSuite 3.0 with all Solaris 2 workgroup and enterprise server licenses at no additional charge. This reflects a growing trend on the part of UNIX system vendors to bundle additional commercial functionality into their base operating system environments. Online: DiskSuite 3.0 is orderable separately for use with desktop systems. TRANSITION SCHEDULE ++++++++++++++++++++ Online: DiskSuite 2.0.1 will begin to be removed off the price list according to the following schedule Last day to Quote December 9, 1994 Last day to Order February 10, 1995 Last day to Ship March 31, 1995 Online: DiskSuite 3.0 is fully compatible with the previous Online: DiskSuite 2.x releases. No reformatting or data conversion is required to move to the Online: DiskSuite 3.0 environment. Solaris 2.4 customers will not need to dump and restore their data to move between journaling and non-journaling file system modes because both modes use the same UFS file system constructs. This may not be true for competitive journaling file systems that are available for use on Solaris 2 environments. For Solaris 2.x customers currently using an Online: DiskSuite 2.x release, an Online: DiskSuite 3.0 upgrade product is available. This will allow Solaris 2 customers who are not running Solaris 2.4 to move to Online: DiskSuite 3.0 if they so desire, but they will not be able to take advantage of the journaling feature. Solaris 1 customers upgrading to Solaris 2.4 or later will receive Online: DiskSuite 3.0 at no additional charge, regardless of whether they were running it under Solaris 1 or not. Current Online: DiskSuite 1.x/2.x customers who move to Solaris 2.4 will note that although the product is now bundled with the operating system, software enhancements fees are still charged separately for Online: DiskSuite 3.0. These fees will be collected by SunService only from those customers who use Online: DiskSuite.
