The IMMXpress network strategy will deliver a complete multimedia network with Siemens as the system integrator. "Siemens and our worldwide partners give customers the capabilities to develop and deliver advanced services on an integrated narrow and broadband network based on international standards," said Van Cullens, Senior Vice President for Marketing and Business Development at Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. "Customers about to make a significant, long-term decision to choose a multimedia system integrator for major network deployment must assess all possible alternatives. However, before this alliance was formed, there was no clear alternative. Now there is," he added. Key to the IMMXpress is its modularity. Network providers with an embedded base of equipment can select the components of IMMXpress that best suit their network evolution plans, while protecting their initial investments. Similarly, IMMXpress components can be deployed incrementally as revenues are justified. And if a network provider needs a complete end-to-end solution for video, interactive multimedia and telephony services, including full systems integration services, then IMMXpress can also serve that need. Working with its partners, Siemens will immediately provide solutions to a new broadband communications network capable of transmitting multimedia services effectively and economically. Under IMMXpress, each of the partners will bring its particular products and expertise to the integrated solution: o Siemens, as the overall system integrator, will bring key products and technologies from its Public Networks Group, from Siemens Corporate Research, and from its affiliate, GPT LIMITED. Key among these contributions are ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology; network management expertise; intelligent network call control such as Level 1 and 2; and advanced multimedia applications and content conversion for facilities and MPEG encoding. Additionally, Siemens, as one of the world's largest telecommunications systems suppliers -- operating in 120 countries -- provides immediate, global marketing channels for the alliance members. GPT will bring key intelligent network solutions for the Level 1 gateway, and rapid service creation facilities through multimedia INventor. GPT is Britain's leading telecommunications systems supplier, and provides solutions worldwide for personal, public and private communications. GPT has been working with the new UK cable companies to provide advanced telecommunications solutions. GPT has already supplied intelligent network solutions to the UK's leading telecommunications operators as well as the INventor packages for rapid service creation. o Scientific-Atlanta, a world leading supplier of broadband full complement of products and expertise. This includes a full line of set-top terminals; cable telephony CoAxiom systems; hybrid fiber coax distribution systems; and head-end receiving and processing equipment. Scientific-Atlanta brings to the team a strong background in broadband systems, including expertise in PEG video compression, digital audio, analog technology, and RF equipment. o Sun Microsystems has built upon a rich legacy in networking and server technology to deliver video networking and video server technology to enterprises worldwide. Throughout its history, Sun has remained committed to barrier-free interfaces and open standards, which has contributed to Sun's leadership in telecommunications, an industry also dedicated to standards and a level playing field. In addition, Sun brings an international and strategic corporate business focus to the alliance, with a wide range of partners and a presence in more that 145 countries. The alliance is based on a philosophy of open interfaces, which gives customers a wide array of choices for customized solutions. It also provides flexibility, allowing current alliance members to quickly adapt to a constantly changing market. The alliance is committed to supporting whatever common standards the marketplace selects, including application interfaces. Whatever the customers needs, IMMXpress will deliver the same level of quality and proven performance that Siemens has provided to its customers worldwide during almost 150 years of telecommunication experience. "We believe this philosophy is a strength and is very attractive to additional partners interested in joining this globally based alliance. In this regard, we expect more partner announcements very shortly," Cullens stated. The alliance partners will demonstrate their technology in the Siemens booth at the Western Cable Show -- Anaheim, California, November 30 to December 2, 1994 (Booth #3222). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Sun FlashBack - A Full-Text On Demand Newsletter John J.
