SunFlash 71.20 SMCC Introduces hyperSPARC SPARCstation ====================================================== Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC) continued to enhance the industry's most successful high-end workstation family, the SPARCstation(TM) 20, by introducing a new model, the SPARCstation 20 Model HS11. The new workstation is aimed at compute-intensive technical applications where the system's floating-point performance and cache memory architecture are an advantage. Among these applications are simulation, electronic design, modeling and analysis. It is supported by the Solaris(TM) 2.4 software environment and by a new release of the Solaris 1 software environment, called Solaris 1.1.2. The new SPARCstation 20 Model HS11 joins SMCC's highly successful SPARCstation 20 Model 61 at the high end of SMCC's SPARCstation 20 family. The new SPARCstation 20 Model HS11 is rated at 104.5 SPECint92 and 127.6 SPECfp92. "At Sun, we stress the use of open technologies. Our open business model allows us to take the best technology available at a given time and apply it to the needs of our customers. SPARC(R) technology is an example," said Jay Puri, vice president of product marketing at SMCC. "By using hyperSPARC in the new Model HS11, we have responded to those customers whose applications can take advantage of the floating-point performance offered by the ROSS processor and delivered a workstation to match their needs." The new SPARCstation 20 model HS11 is built on the familiar "pizza box" package of all SPARCstation 20 workstations, providing the kind of expandability customers have come to expect: up to 512 megabytes of main memory, up to 2 gigabytes of internal mass storage, and four SBus slots. The workstation also includes a CD-ROM drive, 3.5-inch floppy disk drive and high-quality audio. The SPARCstation 20 Model HS11 is binary compatible with existing applications. Further, SPARCstation 10 and SPARCstation 20 workstation and server customers whose applications can benefit from the hyperSPARC architectural features can upgrade their systems with 100 MHz hyperSPARC modules. "The SPARCstation 20 family is the highest volume, most widely supported high-end workstation line in the industry," Puri said, "With the Model HS11, the SPARCstation 20 family continues to be the industry value leader." Strong Software Environment Support ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Operating system support comes from the Solaris 2.4 and from the enhanced Solaris 1.1.2 software environments. With the Solaris 1.1.2 release, Sun continues its focus on quality operating environments. Additionally, the installation time of Solaris 1.1.2 has been reduced by as much as 25 percent. Full compatibility is maintained with previous Solaris 1 releases. Further, Solaris 1.1.2 supports all SMCC SPARC systems supported by previous releases of Solaris 1, in addition to the new hyperSPARC upgrade modules. Pricing and Availability +++++++++++++++++++++++++ The SPARCstation 20 Model HS11 is available in a base configuration with 32 megabytes of memory, 1 gigabyte of mass storage, and a 17-inch TurboGX(TM) color monitor, for $18, 695. It will be available December, 1994. Solaris 1.1.2 is available now for the United States. A European (French, German, Italian and Swedish) version will be available in December. Versions for Japan, Korea, PRC and Taiwan will be available in January.
