Does SPARCstation 20 obsolete the SPARCstation 10? A. No price changes or transition dates are being announced for SPARCstation 10 systems at this time. All SPARCstation 10 systems continue to be orderable. However, fast migration to the new SPARCstation 20 is expected with its higher performance, richer features, and lower system prices. Q. Should SPARCstation 10 customers upgrade to SPARCstation 20 systems? A. It depends on what they're after. SPARCstation 10 systems can continue to upgrade to higher performance technologies such as the SM61 60 MHz SPARC modules or to faster networking options such as SunATM and SunFastEthernet, so performance alone probably will not convince a SPARCstation 10 customer to upgrade to SPARCstation 20. However, customers that are interested in SX graphics or have applications that benefit from the faster SPARCstation 20 system bus would find an upgrade to SPARCstation 20 beneficial. Q. When should a customer order a SPARCstation 20 Model 51 versus Model 50? A. The SPARCstation 20 Model 51 with 1-MB SuperCache is a similar processor configuration to the popular SPARCstation 10 Model 51 system. The SPARCstation 20 Model 51 is recommended for: - easy transition from SPARCstation 10 Model 51 system - applications that especially benefit from the additional system performance of SuperCache, such as: database and multiuser/ timesharing server applications, CASE and other engineering development use. - higher system performance than the SPARCstation 20 Model 50 but lower cost than Model 61 systems. Product Q. Can SPARCstation 10 system memory or SX frame buffer SIMM be installed in a SPARCstation 20? A. No, SPARCstation 20 has a faster system MBus therefore requiring the higher speed SPARCstation 20 60ns system memory and SX video frame buffer SIMM. Q. Can the 16- and 64-MB SIMMs be installed individually and mixed? A. Yes, SPARCstation 20 memory SIMMs can be installed one at a time and can be a mixture of the 3 different sizes. When the 32-MB SIMM is introduced (mid May/ early June), it too can be mixed with the other memory SIMMs. Q. Does SPARCstation 20 support AUI Ethernet? A. Yes, however an optional AUI adapter cable (p/n X981A) is required. Q. Why aren't SPARCstation 10 SPARC modules supported on SPARCstation 20? A. SPARCstation 10 SPARC modules were not designed to operate on the faster SPARCstation 20 system 50 MHz MBus and are not qualified to operate in the new enclosure (thermal and regulatory status). Only SPARCstation 20 specific SPARC modules should be used. Q. What is meant by "SX graphics available as standard?" Does this mean that every SPARCstation 20 comes with SX graphics? A. When placing an order for a SPARCstation 20, SX graphics is available at no additional cost. Only SPARCstation 20 systems that have been ordered with SX graphics will include the SX frame buffer 'VSIMM,' however, since all SPARCstation 20 systems have the SX graphics processor/ memory controller integrated into the system, any SPARCstation 20 system that had been originally ordered with TurboGX, TurboGXplus, or ZX graphics has the ability to have SX graphics frame buffer 'VSIMM' installed at any time with a SX second monitor option package. Q. What differentiates the SX 4-MB frame buffer from the SX-8MB frame buffer option? A. Both the SX 4-MB and SX 8-MB frame buffers provide identical graphics and imaging performance, but differ in supported display formats. The SX 4-MB frame buffer (VSIMM) supports 1152 x 900 resolution in 8- or 24-bit color mode 1280 x 1024 resolution in 8-bit color mode The SX 8-MB frame buffer (VSIMM) supports 1152 x 900 resolution in 8- or 24-bit color mode 1280 x 1024 resolution in 8- or 24-bit color mode The SX frame buffer 'VSIMM' is installed in either a 4- or 8-MB version. To increase video memory from the SX 4-MB requires an upgrade to the SX 8-MB frame buffer. Q. Is 64-bit SBus supported on SPARCstation 20? A. No, not at this time. All SPARCstation 20 systems have been designed to support 64-bit SBus, however this feature requires support from a future release of Solaris 2.x operating system. Only SBus cards designed for 64-bit operation will use this mode when supported. Q. Will a Model 614MP be offered? A. There are no plans to offer a Model 614MP at this time. Currently, the 60 MHz SuperSPARC modules are being offered in uniprocessor (Model 61) and 2-way MP (Model 612MP) SPARCstation 20 systems. Additional testing will be required in order to understand if a 4x60MHz version is even feasible due to the higher temperatures generated by the 60MHz parts. Software Q. Which version of Solaris license is included? A. SPARCstation 20 systems support and include system license for the current release of Solaris 2.3 only. Q. Why is only a Solaris 2.3 system license included with the system? A. Solaris 2.3 is the industry leading enterprise wide operating environment and provides access to powerful graphics and multimedia, ZX and SX graphics, multiprocessing power, and many other current and future capabilities. Solaris 2.3 is clearly the operating environment of choice for all new SPARCstations. However, since the SPARCstation 20 was designed to be compatible with the SPARCstation 10, it will support BOTH current releases of Solaris: Solaris 2.3 and Solaris 1.1.1 Version B. All SPARCstation 20 systems include a single system license for Solaris 2.3, but there is a small additional charge for the optional Solaris 1.1.1 Version B system license. Only TurboGX and TurboGXplus are supported by Solaris 1.1.1 Version B. Q. Will SPARCstation 10 SunOS(TM) 4.1.3 applications be supported on the SPARCstation 20 system? A. There are no known technical differences to prevent this, however the official supported Solaris 1.x version for SPARCstation 20 system is the current release, Solaris 1.1.1 Version B.
