BUD TRIBBLE - Vice President, Object Products, SunSoft, Inc. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ GUEST BIOGRAPHIES ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ JOHN GAGE - Director, Science Office, Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation John Gage is responsible for Sun's relationships with the world scientific and public policy communities, international scientific institutions and groups developing new forms of scientific research involving computing. He is on scientific and advisory panels of the United States National Science Foundation, the US Congress Office of Technology Assessment, the European Institute of Technology and the United States National Academy of Sciences. He has recently been appointed to the US National Research Council Mathematical Sciences Education Board. He is a member of ACM, IEEE, SIAM, AMS, AAAS, and SMPTE. He attended the Harvard Business School and the Harvard Graduate School of Public Policy. He did doctoral work in economics and mathematics at the University of Berkeley at the same time as Bill Joy. Gage subsequently left Berkeley with Joy to start Sun in 1982. Gage is on the Board of Directors of Unicode, an industry consortium of IBM, Microsoft, Apple, Novell, Sun, GO Corporation, and others to provide multilingual capability in all world scripts for all documents and applications. STEVE JOBS - Chairman and CEO, NeXT Computer, Inc. Steven P. Jobs co-founded and was chairman of Apple Computer, Inc, guiding Apple to become a $2 billion company. While at Apple, Steve co-designed the Apple II and led the development, marketing and manufacturing of the Macintosh. After leaving Apple, Steve co-founded and is Chairman and CEO of NeXT Computer, Inc., which develops and markets NEXTSTEP, the award-winning objects-based operating system. NEXTSTEP enables FORTUNE 1000 companies to rapidly develop advanced, custom, client/server business applications. NEXTSTEP, which runs on over 100 Intel- based PCs today and soon will run on RISC workstations from HP and Sun, is the leading object-oriented solution in business today. In recognition of his pioneering work in personal computers, Steve was awarded the National Technology Medal by President Reagan in 1985 and the Jefferson Award for Public Service in 1987. BILL JOY - Founder and Vice President of Research, Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation Bill Joy is a founder and current VP for Research at Sun Microsystems, a leading manufacturer of powerful computer workstations. He is researching new architectures for human- computer interaction, involving new kinds of interfaces, new system and application software architectures, and new ways of storing information to make information systems more agreeable to use. In the 1970's Bill was the principal designer of the U.C. Berkeley version of the UNIX operating system whose networking protocols and implementations helped spawn the Internet. In the 1980's he spearheaded Sun's evangelism of the "open systems" model of computing which allows different groups to contribute design by making the specifications of its components freely available. Other technical contributions include co-design of the SPARC microprocessor architecture and several of its implementations and design of the Network File System (NFS) an industry standard way for computers to share files. Education: University of California, Berkeley 1975-1982 Master of Science, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science University of Michigan 1971-1975 Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering Some Professional Awards: Lifetime Achievement Award, USENIX Association For Profound intellectual achievement and unparalleled services to the UNIX community, 1993. Grace Murray Hopper Award, Association for Computing Machinery The award honors a select group of computer scientists who have contributed outstanding achievements to the art and science of computing, 1986 A Recent Publication: Joy, W.N., "The Future of Computation", in Nanotechnology: Research & Perspectives, B.C. Stone is a founder (1989), President & CEO of the Object Management Group, Inc. (OMG), the world's largest software development industry organization. OMG is focused on formulating standard interfaces for distributed applications using object technology. The group's first specification, the "Common Object Request Broker", has already been endorsed and committed to by over one hundred companies. OMG is funded by the top computer, software, networking, and end user organizations in the information processing business. They include IBM, HP, Sun Microsystems, Siemens Nixdorf, Digital, AT&T, Microsoft, NEC, Fujitsu and Boeing. He has published articles in many trade magazines and is a director of many small software companies. Mr. Stone was formerly a group manager and director of software products at Data General Corporation. For seven years he formulated Data General's successful strategy in multi-user integrated office systems. Revenues grew from $0 in 1982 to over $300M in 1987 for this product line. Mr. Stone is credited with helping to pioneer and create the multi-billion dollar integrated software marketplace. Mr. Stone planned, priced and managed more than fifty software products while at Data General ranging from multi-user office systems, graphics editors, LAN products, mail systems, to an object-oriented design for a future product line (recently spun off from DG and formed as HyperDesk Inc.). Prior to joining Data General, Mr. Stone held various technical and marketing positions with Exxon ant CPT Corporation. A native of Boston, MA, USA, Mr. Stone graduated from the University of New Hampshire in business and computer science and attended the executive program for business at the Colgate Darden School, UVA. Mr. Stone is a member of numerous professional organizations. He is a director of Object World Corp. and a board member of many small software companies across the world. He is well known throughout the world as an authority, writer and speaker on software and has been featured in many print articles, television and radio. GUY (BUD) L.
