Mclaughlin, Publisher & Editor - flash@sun.com ____________________________________________________________________________ 66.55 SPARCclassic X X terminal Software Version 2.0 o X Terminal Software Version 2.0 provides the SPARCclassic X with many of the features most sought out by customers (e.g. Display Postscript, local Motif window managers) o Upgrades to X Terminal Software Version 2.0 are available o Transition of X Terminal Software Version 1.0 (325 lines) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) announces X Terminal Software Version 2.0. This new version adds a wealth of new features to the SPARCclassic(TM) X X-terminal to further enhance its integration into the SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) environment. Version 2.0 incorporates the most cost-effective implementation of Display Postscript(TM) operating in only 8-Mbytes of terminal memory. Local Motif(R) as well as OPEN LOOK(R) window managers, that improve terminal responsiveness, come standard. Simple network management protocol (SNMP) and remote reset used in conjuction with SunNet Manager(TM) and the xtmgr administration tool, further improve the advanced administration capabilities of X Terminal Software Version 2.0. Local printer support is also provided via the parallel port. The SPARCclassic X X-terminal remains the industry's most innovative and is Sun's lowest priced Enterprise Network Desktop system. Advanced Systems magazine (March 1994) ranked it the industry's best X-terminal for administration and performance. Point-and-click adminmistration tools with pop-up and pull-down menues, speed centralized administration by grouping classes of users. Superior networking through a 50-MHz microSPARC(TM) processor and a selection from two levels of graphic boards enhance application performance. The SPARCclassic X is also the industry's easiest X-terminal to install. Just type one command and answer one yes/no question and install the terminal software effortlessly in just minutes. No other X-terminal can claim the superior administration, installation, and performance of SPARCclassic X. No X-terminal can claim the unique investment protection of SPARCclassic X. It is the lowest cost, plug-and-play upgrade to distributed client-server computing. Software upgrades from X Terminal Software Version 1.0 to X Terminal Software Version 2.0 are also available for current SPARCclassic X customers. One license per SPARCclassic X X-terminal is required QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Will AnwserBook be supported on the SPARCclassic X? A. Yes, the X-based AnswerBook available with Solaris 2.3 will operate with X Terminal Software Version 2.0. Older, NeWS-based versions of AnswerBook will not. Q. For a customer who already has SPARCclassic X systems, how can they upgrade their software to Version 2.0? A. The customer needs to purchase the X Terminal Software Revision 2.0 Administration Kit; at least one per site is required. They also must purchase a license upgrade for as many SPARCclassic X systems as they wish to upgrade to run Version 2.0. Q. Is the Version 2.0 software users guide included in the purchase of SPARCcalssic X? A. No. Sun is making the user manuals optional in response to customers, especially large ones, whose users need but only a couple copies. Customers instead, can order only what each needs limiting waste and saving money, a cost savings to the customer that offsets Revision 2.0 license costs. Q. Are there any additional fees for Display PostScript or local Motif window manager? A. No. Unlike our competitors who charge extra, per-terminal fees for this functionality, X Terminal Software Version 2.0 has no hidden fees. Sun delivers the same look-and-feel on the SPARCclassic X as with our workstations. Q. Is the SPARCclassic X Energy Star compliant? A. Special software built into Version 2.0 shuts down VESA-equipped monitors attached to idle SPARCclassic X systems, meeting the government's Energy Star requirements. Currently the 20-inch color is VESA-ready. Other configurations of SPARCclassic X meet Energy Star guidelines simply by powering down the attached monitor. Q. What are the boot host requirements? A. Any SPARCstation(TM), SPARCserver(TM) or SPARCcenter(TM) system with Solaris 1.1 or later Solaris 1.x release or Solaris 2.1 or later Solaris 2.x release is required from which the X-terminals can boot and be administered. The servers must be present after terminal booting to provide the SPARCclassic X with additional X-terminal utility services. Q. What peripheral ports function with Version 2.0? A. Local parallel printer functionality is supported for customer applications that require local printer resources. The serial port is not supported at this time. Q. How much X-terminal memory does Version 2.0 need in which to operate? A. 4 MB of terminal memory is enough for most of Version 2.0's features. A total minimum of 8 MB is needed in the SPARCclassic X to operate with Display PostScript-based applications.
