SUNSOFT ANNOUNCES POSIX.2 FOR SOLARIS Continues to Drive Industry Standards Movement POSIX.2 provides standards-based portability for command-based utilities known as "shell scripts," making command-line programming usable in heterogeneous environments without the need for expensive rewrites. POSIX is one of the standards building blocks of X/Open's Portability Guide (XPG), a major branding campaign that allows users to identify open systems vendors. "Standardization is a key component to delivering open, enterprise computing solutions for heterogeneous environments, which is primarily why we participate so extensively in the POSIX Working group and other standards organizations," said Janpieter Scheerder, vice president and general manager of SunSoft's Solaris products business unit. "With the POSIX.2 compliance, we look forward to even stronger relationships with federal, state and local governments, as well as telecommunications companies and large commercial organizations." SunSoft currently supports and participates actively in several POSIX working groups -- Solaris is already POSIX 1003.1 and 1003.2 compliant -- and the company intends to integrate several other POSIX specifications as they become available and the market demands them. SunSoft is also a driving force in the creation of the Unified UNIX specification, SPEC 1170, and continues to work closely with the companies involved in cose, which have focused their efforts on the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). POSIX.2 compliance will be built on the Solaris operating environment. It will be available this August, initially on Solaris 2.3.
