Mclaughlin, Publisher & Editor - flash@sun.com ____________________________________________________________________________ 66.09 SPARCclassic X Software Enhanced Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) introduced significant software enhancements to its SPARCclassic(TM) X system, including the industry's only free Adobe Display PostScript(TM) capabilities, improved network management and a choice of window managers. These capabilities, added to the existing features of the SPARCclassic X -- including unmatched ease-of-installation/administration and easy, inexpensive upgradeability -- make this a top X terminal solution. (125 lines) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPARCCLASSIC X SOFTWARE ENHANCED New Features Include Free Display Postscript and Improved Network Management "A few months ago, the SPARCclassic X was recognized as the industry's best X terminal in head-to-head tests performed by Advanced Systems magazine," said Vicki Brown, director of entry desktop marketing for SMCC. "With the new features and enhancements announced today, our X terminal solution is even more attractive, especially in SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) environments, where it's designed to work optimally." Full Display Postscript Capabilities An important new feature of the SPARCclassic X is Display Postscript, giving users full use of third-party applications such as FrameMaker(R), which require the display of Postscript data and files, and the use of Solaris(R) 2.3 software environment applications such as ImageTool, Pageview(R) and AnswerBook(R). Display Postscript on the SPARCclassic X carries no per-user license fee and requires only 8 megabytes of memory, making it the most inexpensive implementation of Display Postscript on the market. By comparison, other vendors charge for this software and require at least 12 megabytes of memory to run it. The enhanced SPARCclassic X software also offers the choice of the OPEN LOOK(R) or Motif(R) window managers at no extra charge; support for a local parallel printer; and enhanced network administration capabilities, including SNMP (simple network management protocol), which provides access to SunNet Manager(R), and a choice of naming services -- Network Information Services (NIS, NIS+) and DNS. In addition to these new features, the SPARCclassic X continues to offer unmatched capabilities that eliminate time-consuming installation and administration procedures. The GUI-based X terminal software is installed with just one command and one "yes" or "no" response. Terminals are added to the network by issuing a single command and answering three questions. By comparison, other X terminals require up to 30 steps to carry out the same tasks. The SPARCclassic X also has the world's best performance (up to 2.33 Xmarks) among X terminals, and provides the easiest and most inexpensive upgrade path in the industry -- users simply add memory, a hard disk and Solaris object code license. Pricing and Availability The enhanced X terminal software is available immediately and is shipped standard on all SPARCclassic X systems. Existing SPARCclassic X users can upgrade to the new software for as little as $20 per seat.
