AIR TRANPORTATION INDUSTRY CHOOSING SUN(R) SYSTEMS TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE Client-Server Computing Comes to Transportation Facing increasing competitive market pressures and business challenges similar to other commercial users in the financial, retail, and telecommunications industries, the transportation industry is using Sun SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) systems to keep tight controls on their costs, deliver better customer service, remain competitive and invest wisely in an integrated technology environment to achieve the first three goals. Key business applications being distributed across the network and onto client-server systems by transportation customers include: crew/flight scheduling, terminal management, passenger revenue accounting, reservation systems, software development, and network management. Customers Choose Sun Customers are taking advantage of the high performance, competitive price and interoperability of Sun's Solaris(R)-based product line to implement mission-critical business applications. For example, Emirates has chosen Sun Microsystems as its strategic information technology partner to provide hardware, software, integration and support services as the company moves to an open systems information architecture. Emirates has ordered three multiprocessor SPARCserver 1000 systems from SMCC's local distributor, Gulf Computers, to manage Emirates corporate-wide, mission-critical business applications including airport ground services, accounting and passenger revenue, cargo, payroll and personnel. McClellan-Palomar Airport in San Diego County was the first of a number of leading airports on the east and west coast to have recently purchased from Lochard Environment Systems, a Global Environment Management System (GEMS) running on SPARCstation(TM) 20 systems to monitor aircraft noise and flight tracks. GEMS will also monitor air & water quality. These systems, the first installed in North America, will aid airport management in developing environmental programs and adhering to strict FAA guidelines regarding aircraft pollution levels.
