MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., -- May 31, 1994 -- SunSoft, Inc., today announced that it has licensed the LEL(tm) (Link, Embed and Launch-to-edit(tm)) software from Lotus Development Corp. SunSoft will evaluate LEL for future development efforts with respect to Project DOE (Distributed Object Environment) technology. Lotus' LEL technology provides object linking and embedding functionality for UNIX(r) applications, similar to the Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) 1.0 technology from Microsoft(r) Corporation. "SunSoft strongly believes that interoperability between heterogeneous systems is a key requirement for Fortune 1000 commercial customers," said Richard Probst, manager of DOE business development at SunSoft, Inc. "We have made interoperability a primary focus for the Solaris(r) operating environment and intend to continue this commitment to interoperability as the Solaris Distributed Object Environment (DOE) comes to market." "SunSoft's licensing of LEL is a testament to the need for integrated cross-platform technologies that interoperate across different applications, diverse platforms and multiple operating systems," said Tony Parham, group product manager for Lotus Notes. "Furthermore, we view it as a confirmation of Lotus' leadership in providing innovative solutions that allow workgroups to exchange mission-critical information regardless of computing platform." SunSoft's Project DOE (Distributed Object Environment) is the industry's first mainstream, distributed object system based on the OpenStep(tm) object application environment and Object Management Group (OMG(tm)) standards for corporate developers and end users. SunSoft plans to deliver the first release of DOE for Solaris in early 1995, which will bring distributed object capability to the Solaris operating environment. The DOE environment will significantly reduce the overall cost of software development and management through the use of 'snap-together' software components, or objects, to create enterprise-scale, distributed, mission-critical applications. Lotus is currently shipping LEL in Notes(tm) for Sun and has committed to delivering LEL in all Notes for UNIX client and server platforms. SunSoft, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., the exclusive computer and system software supplier to World Cup USA 1994. The company has offices in North America, Europe and Asia. SunSoft is a leading supplier of 32-bit system software solutions for SPARC and Intel 386/486- and Pentium(tm)-based computers.
