One, in the debug option, enables local users to gain root access. The other, in the error message header option, enables local users to read any file on the system. Both vulnerabilities are known in the intruder community. 67.43 Empire's UNIX System Management Agent From: rdk@cc.gatech.edu (Bobby Krupczak) Empire Technologies, Inc., announced a new version of its UNIX System Management Agent that will let System Administrators control the Sun workstations on their networks from a central site. In addition, the company announced new agent software that complies with the Simple Network Management Protocol's Host Resources (RFC 1514) Management Information Base. Empire demonstrated the UNIX System and Host Resources management at the Network Operations Showcase at NetWorld + Interop 94 in Las Vegas. 67.44 Radia Perlman - Geek of the Week From: markw@VFL.Paramax.COM (Mark H. Weber) Carl Malamud interviews Radia Perlman, author of Interconnections: Bridges and Routers (Addison Wesley, 1992), considered to be the authoritative book on the subject. Dr. Perlam is a staff scientist at Novell and was the chief designer of the OSI ES-IS and IS-IS routing protocols. The audio file of this interview is availble via ftp and cassette. 67.45 HPCwire Table of Contents: July 15 HPCwire is a for-fee Text-On-Demand News Magazine for High-Performance Computing. The participants will examine the current issues and trends in high-speed networking, and explore the impact of high-speed networks on systems and applications design. In an attempt to temper the hype about the "information superhighway" by presenting what is real today, researchers from both the UNIX and the high-speed networking community will share their experiences and the lessons they have learned on different operating systems and high-speed networks. (Also available as: http://www.usenix.org/events/networking/HISPEED.html ) 67.50 Call For Papers: Network and Distributed System Security From: balenson@tis.com (David M. Balenson) GOAL: The symposium will bring together people who are building software and/or hardware to provide network and distributed system security services. The symposium is intended for those interested in the more practical aspects of network and distributed system security, focusing on actual system design and implementation, rather than in theory. We hope to foster the exchange of technical information that will encourage and enable the Internet community to apply, deploy and advance the state of the available security technology. Symposium proceedings will be published by the Internet Society. ********************************************************************** For information about SunFlash send mail to info-sunflash@Sun.COM.
