The new SPARCcenter 2000 system configurations are based on the DWIS fast and wide SCSI host adapter card, the new 5.25-in. 2.9-GB DSCSI disk, and the new 4 port SBus Quad Ethernet Controller (SQEC) card. These components offer significant performance and capacity increases over the combination of the 2.1-GB disk and the DSBE/S host adapter/ethernet interface card found in current system configurations. The maximum current storage capacity of the SPARCcenter 2000 system is now increased from 491 Gbytes to 678 Gbytes. The new SPARCcenter 2000 configurations offer significantly increased performance and capacity at a slight increase in list price. For only a 3% increase in list price, the base configuration (PN S2202-01-128-P85) offers twice the SCSI bandwidth, 38% more disk capacity, and two and half times the number of ethernet ports than the comparable configuration (PN S2202-01-128-P82), based on the DSBE card and the 2.1 Gbyte disks. For a 6% increase in list price, the high end configuration offers twice the SCSI bandwidth, over twice the disk capacity, and two and a half times the number of ethernet ports of the comparable existing configuration. The SPARCcenter 2000 offers very large capacity in a single system footprint. One fully configured system cabinet can support: - 20 CPUs - 5 GB of RAM - 52 GB of disk - 45 GB of backup capacity - 20 Ethernets - CD-ROM - 1/4-in. tape - 31 additional SBus slots for expansion purposes The following is a detailed comparison of the two new systems with comparable existing systems. - Entry level, base configuration: Existing System New System --------------- ---------- S2202-01-128-P82 S2202-01-128-P85 SCSI Bus Bandwidth 10 MB/sec. 20 MB/sec. Disk 8.4 GB (4x2.1 GB disks) 17.4 GB (6x2.9 GB disks) Ethernet 2 ports 5 ports HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ Solaris(R) 2.3 operating environment or higher is required to support the new configurations AVAILABILITY ------------ The systems in this announcement are orderable immediately. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Can the DWIS controller, the 2.9 GB drives, and the SQEC card be added to existing systems? A. Yes, but the systems must be running Solaris 2.3. Q. Can the 2.9 drives be mixed with 2.1 drives in the same system? A. Trays of 2.9 drives and trays of 2.1 drives can be supported on the same system. All drives within a tray must be of the same type. Q. Will the SPARCcenter 2000 systems with 2.1 drives and DSBE be removed from the pricelist? A. There is no immediate plan to remove these systems, but the newer configurations offer better performance, higher capacity, and better price/performance. Q. How many SBus slots are used in these new configurations? A. Three SBus slots are used. One for the FSBE card used to control the CD-ROM and the backup tape, one for the DWIS card, and one for the SQEC card. Q. What are the maximum number of DWIS cards and 2.9-GB disk trays that can be supported in the SPARCcenter 2000 system? A. Up to 20 DWIS cards and up to 39 2.9-GB disk trays. Each DWIS card can support 1 or 2 2.9-GB disk trays. Q. What is the maximum number of SQEC cards supported in the SPARCcenter 2000 system? A. Up to 5 cards, for a total of 20 Ethernet interfaces. Q. What is the maximum number of Ethernet interfaces supported on the SPARCcenter 2000? A. System software can support at most 20 active interfaces. While it is physically possible to install more than 20 interfaces with a combination of SQEC, DSBE, FSBE, and SBE cards, only 20 interfaces can be active. This number is expected to increase in a subsequent release.
