(111 lines) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN COMPUTERS TO RUN INNOVATIVE NEW LOGISTICS DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM FROM NON-STOP LOGISTICS Sun and NON-STOP Partnership To Result in Unique Distribution Centers MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.- January 17, 1994 - Computers from Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC), the world's leading supplier of workstations and servers, were chosen by NON-STOP Logistics Corporation, for a sophisticated new concept in grocery distribution system that could slash costs by billions of dollars. NON-STOP is a new company that has developed an innovative logistics system to run on Sun SPARCstation computers and SPARCservers within a nationwide network of 40 sort and load cross-docking facilities, similar to those used by overnight package express carriers. Grocery chains can realize immense savings using these computerized distribution centers. NON-STOP's breakthrough logistics systems are capable of predicting merchandise demand with the sufficient accuracy to permit products to "flow through" the distribution pipeline and arrive at supermarkets "just-in-time." When NON-STOP's logistics systems are combined with its nationwide facilities, the company is capable of supplying the packaged, frozen and dry grocery needs of virtually all supermarkets in the nation. "NON-STOP is changing the way packaged grocery products are distributed in the United States. We have undertaken a project with the potential to save the industry billions of dollars and we needed a strong systems partner that would support us in a project of this scale," said Homer Dunn, president of NON-STOP. "The new, just-in-time product flows being demanded by retailers and consumer products manufacturers require innovative, highly efficient information systems and networks. Sun offered us a very powerful systems environment to develop and deploy our applications and we feel Sun is a significant addition to NON-STOP's team of partners." SMCC continues to gain strength in all segments of the retail industry and is capturing a number of new business customers, including supermarkets, chain drug stores, general and mass merchandise, specialty hard and soft-goods, department stores, catalogue and home shopping companies as well as hospitality. "More and more companies in retail and distribution are using Sun technology to run their business operations and to quickly develop mission critical applications," said Bob DeLaney, manager, worldwide retail market development, SMCC. "Being selected as the exclusive UNIX computer supplier for development and deployment by NON-STOP demonstrates Sun's rapid expansion and proven expertise in this market". SMCC joins a rapidly expanding team of NON-STOP partners. This list includes Nielsen Marketing Research of Northbrook, Illinois, Oracle Corporation of Redwood City, California, and truckload carriers Schneider National Inc. of Green Bay, Wisconsin and J.B. Hunt Transport Inc. of Lowell, Arkansas. Both SMCC and NON-STOP will participate in joint marketing and promotional activities.
