SUN LICENSES SPARCSTATION LX BOARD DESIGN TO LEADING CHINESE WORKSTATION MANUFACTURER Technology Made Available Through SPARC Technology Business Unit BEIJING, CHINA -- 14 January 1994 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that its SPARC Technology Business (STB) has licensed a high-volume microSPARC(TM)-based board design to Beijing Huasun Computer Company, the largest Chinese manufacturer of computer workstations based on the SPARC(R) architecture. Huasun is a subsidiary of the Sixth Research Institute of the Ministry of Electronics China. This licensed technology is a proven design identical to that design used by Sun in the SPARCstation(TM) LX workstation. The agreement represents the first time a Chinese company has licensed this level of technology from the United States. The SPARCstation LX board design license includes access to full design and technology documentation, data sheets and simulation files. Huasun will also receive engineering training and support from STB as part of the licensing agreement. The licensing of the SPARCstation LX board design further demonstrates STB's ongoing commitment to make SPARC processor and system product designs, and engineering services available to outside buyers to help decrease third-party development costs and accelerate time-to-market. "The Huasun license represents an important achievement in STB's ongoing efforts to make SPARC technology openly available worldwide," said Chet Silvestri, vice president, technology sales, STB. "This is a most significant advance for both companies in our commitment to the growth of open systems technology throughout the world." "The licensing of the SPARCstation LX board design will accelerate time-to-market for all identified opportunities for Huasun's ruggedized workstation," said Mr. Lian Kui Hu, general manager of Huasun. "We will no longer have to design our own boards from the ground up." Huasun Computer Company will add value to the SPARCstation LX board design to tailor the technology to specific customer needs. Specifically, Huasun will produce ruggedized workstations for use in factory floor environments and other industrial applications such as oil exploration. In addition, Huasun intends to upgrade the graphics capabilities of the system using Sun's advanced TurboGX(TM) accelerator. Huasun officials expect that access to the SPARCstation LX technology will speed the workstation vendor's time-to-market by a significant amount of time. The only volume workstation manufacturer in China, Huasun has 21.2 percent of the 1992 workstation market in China according to IDC China/Hong Kong Ltd. The Beijing Huasun Computer Company Limited is a joint venture co-funded by the Sixth Institute of The Ministry of Electronics Industry (MEI) and the Frobal Pte. Company of Singapore. The company gives priority to the development, production and marketing of the HUASUN SPARC workstation and value added products of software and hardware applied on its platform.
