Among database servers, the SPARCserver 1000 is the fastest available today. The system achieved 1079.43 transactions per minute (tpm) and $1,038 per tpmC, beating all other servers' published results. These are the first TPC-C results reported by Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC). The full benchmark environment consisted of a network of 1,000 terminals connected to two SPARCserver 10s, one SPARCclassic(TM) and a SPARCserver 1000 in a client-server configuration. The SPARCserver 1000, like others in the product line, uses symmetric multiprocessing. SMP is widely believed to be the best solution for achieving mainframe-level performance at an affordable price. The SPARCserver 1000 is a low-cost, departmental server that also offers multiple I/O channels for large database applications, and a modular hardware architecture to enable cost-effective performance upgrades. "With the industry's best performing database server, we deliver what commercial customers need to manage large corporate databases," said Curt Wozniak, vice president of marketing at SMCC. "While other UNIX(R) vendors make users pay a premium to get `mainframe' performance, we provide mainframe-class performance at workstation prices." SMCC makes the highest volume UNIX multiprocessing servers, with a 31.4 percent share of the market, according to InfoCorp. SMCC is also the world's leading platform for UNIX RDBMS software; 24.9 percent of all UNIX RDBMS software license revenues are sold on Sun hardware. This represents a 47.9 percent growth from 1991 to 1992, according to International Data Corp. "Informix customers get the benefit of an RDBMS that has been tuned for the SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) platform," said Tim Shetler, vice president of product management at Informix. "That's because Sun is one of our primary development platforms. Our joint customers get the best possible database price/performance on any UNIX system." With 14 TPC-C performance tests to date, INFORMIX-OnLine, Informix's high-performance OLTP database server, is also the only relational database server open systems hardware vendors have chosen to use for their published TPC-C benchmarks. The TPC-C benchmark, considered the best test for evaluating real-world application performance, measures transactions per minute in an Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) computing environment, where a number of terminal operators execute transactions against a database. The TPC-C benchmark is centered around a transaction-intensive order entry application. Typical transactions include: OLTP emulation from online users to various storage devices; entering and delivery orders; recording payments; and checking the status of orders and monitoring inventory. The benchmark was performed using a TUXEDO(R) Transaction Processing Monitor for the increased performance and throughput. TUXEDO for the Solaris 2 environment was made available for the benchmark by Independence Technologies, Inc., a leader in client-server development and management software for applications requiring transaction processing capabilities.
