PHILLIP SAMPER NAMED PRESIDENT OF SUN MICROSYSTEMS COMPUTER CORPORATION MOUNTAIN VIEW, California -- February 17, 1994 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that J. Phillip Samper, former vice chairman of Eastman Kodak and a member of the Sun board of directors, has been appointed president of Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC). SMCC is the world's top supplier of open network computing solutions and Sun's largest operating company with revenues exceeding $4 billion. Samper, 59, was appointed to the board in April of 1991. In his new role he will report to chairman and chief executive officer Scott McNealy. As a result of his appointment and in accordance with Sun's policy of having only one inside director, Samper will step down from his position on the board of directors. In his 28 years with Kodak, Samper held a variety of management positions including vice chairman and executive officer and general manager of the company's Photographic and Information Management Division. He also managed Kodak operations worldwide. "Phil brings years of outstanding management, marketing and international experience to SMCC," said McNealy. "His knowledge of Sun and our markets combined with his proven leadership skills will enable him to make a positive contribution immediately. We are particularly pleased to have someone of Phil's stature join our executive management team." Samper graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1960. He received his graduate degree in international management from the American School of International Management in 1961; he was awarded the Sloan Fellowship and received a master of science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973.
