The products, including the low-cost SPARCclassic(TM) workstation and the NeWSprinter CL+(TM) ink jet printer, are the first systems from Sun to qualify for the Energy Star logo. The EPA Energy Star program is a voluntary partnership with computer industry leaders, who are encouraged to make and sell desktop computers, monitors and printers that are energy efficient and have the capability of going to a low-power state when they are inactive. The EPA Energy Star logo, which was introduced earlier this month, will identify vendors' compliant systems. As an Energy Star partner, Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. is working with the EPA to define energy-efficiency criteria for the powerful RISC workstation and server class of computers based on the UNIX(R) system. The Sun(TM) systems utilize low-power, highly integrated designs. For example, at 23 watts, the SPARCclassic system is one of the most energy-efficient workstations available today. SunPics' NeWSprinter CL+ workgroup color printer was recently introduced and is the first color printer from Sun Microsystems. Its standby energy consumption of 12.8 watts is less than half of the Energy Star requirements. It is also designed to print on recycled paper as well as transparencies and plain paper. Sun Thinks "Green" The leader in client-server computing, Sun has been at the forefront of many Fortune 500 companies' efforts to rightsize their computing solutions. Considerable savings in both acquisition and operating costs, including energy costs, have been achieved by moving from old-style computing with large mainframes to the new computing paradigm of networked workstations, servers, and peripherals. Offering Energy Star-compliant workstations and printers is the latest in a continuing series of actions taken by Sun to further lower the life cycle cost of computer investments. For example, Sun recently unveiled its most ecologically-conscious server, the SPARCserver(TM) 1000. This system does not contain paint, coatings, adhesives, threaded inserts, screws, shielding or other attached materials that must be removed to recycle parts. In addition, the shipping package is made from materials that have been recycled from users and was designed for future recycling, as well. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) and SunPics are both subsidiaries of Sun Microsystems, Inc. is the world's leading supplier of open client-server computing solutions.
