Phone: (713) 661-2084 Org: Sun User Group Address: 1330 Beacon Street, Suite 315 Brookline, MA 02146 Voice: +1 617 232-0514 Fax: +1 617 232-1347 Email: office@sug.org In recent weeks, there has been a significant amount of discussion, pro and con, over the possibility that SUG might be absorbed into USENIX as a USENIX STG, similar to SAGE. There have also been rumors of the pending demise of SUG. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know what is actually going on. Before starting, let me introduce myself: I'm Stan Hanks, President of the Sun Users Group. I have been involved actively in SUG since it's founding, and have been involved off and on with the SUG board of directors since 1984. SUG and USENIX had been looking at the prospect of SUG joining USENIX as the first vendor-specific STG, seeing opportunities to provide more benefit to the membership and the community at large by combining forces. These discussions had been occurring off and on for a year, and with increasing intensity since December. One of the primary reasons which led SUG to consider such a move was that it would solve a pressing and immediate problem: settlement of a large debt we owed as a result of low turnout at our 1991 conferences. While SUG enjoys an income in excess of expenses, we were bleeding slowly from having every spare nickel we had siphoned off to service that debt. A USENIX investment in SUG would have given USENIX a good return on their investment, and allowed SUG to start spending money on enhancing and expanding member services and programs. It really looked as though SUG might re-organize as a USENIX STG. Consequently, USENIX asked us to keep a very low profile while they tried to negotiate more favorable settlements with our creditors. For a number of reasons, USENIX backed away from the deal and on Thursday, May 20th, we were informed that USENIX would no longer be pursuing a merger with SUG. Unfortunately, the waters stirred up by this process put SUG in a *VERY* bad position. One of the creditors had started the process to perfect a lien against SUG, which would have allowed them to close us down, taking away everything we had (cash on hand, equipment, and other assets) in order to satisfy their claim against us. With their "drop dead" date being Saturday, May 22nd, we had little time in which to act. So, in order to preserve SUG, on Friday, May 21st, we filed a Chapter 11 (protection from creditors pending reorganization) proceeding. Initial meetings with our trustee have been very encouraging, as we have every intention of filing a reorganization plan and repaying our creditors. (Apparently, many companies file Chapter 11 and then liquidate and re-form as essentially the same outfit but leave their creditors holding the bag -- being serious about staying in business and really re-organizing, as we plan, is somewhat rare). Please note that being in Chapter 11 will have no negative impact on our day to day operations -- in fact, it should improve them as we are now free to spend more of our income on improvements for our members. In fact, several major companies have operated successfully under Chapter 11 -- most notably Continental Airlines, which recently came out from under Chapter 11 protection after *YEARS*, during which time they managed to improve their services and procedures remarkably. We expect to put SUG in that category as well. To that end, * Our conferences, both for Boston (July 27-29) and San Jose (December 6-9), are on track and on target. Your participation and attendance are greatly appreciated. * Our membership is increasing. Your renewal and your solicitation of new members are greatly appreciated. * Alex Newman, our executive director, is coming up with new and innovative ways to improve member services every day. Helping him with your feedback on these is greatly appreciated. During the turmoil surrounding the prospect of joining with USENIX, one very agitated member told me that there were probably 200 very active and very vocal members out there who wouldn't like such a move at all. In the net.flame.wars, several people raised the question as to whether or not anyone really cared if there even *WAS* a Sun User Group. We also got some very strong messages from people who are devoutly committed to SUG. Your other directors and I feel very strongly about SUG. We volunteer to serve on the board, give freely of our time and energy to help manage this organization, and on a routine basis we have to make hard decisions for SUG. We have done many, many things over the last several years to assure that SUG continues to be *YOUR* user group -- a place where users are the first concern, where we *WILL* do things that are not "politically correct" because they are right things to do for the user community. Now it's pay-back time. If you really do care about having an independent Sun User Group whose entire interest is the users' interests; if you really care about having a Sun User Group that is not a sub-group under some other organization like USENIX; if you really want to do more than sit at your keyboard and flame, there are a few things you can do about it: * Pick up your phone and call our office to renew your membership. * Pick up your phone or grab your keyboard and solicit your friends and co-workers to join SUG. Helping us recruit more members is a VERY BIG contribution. * Contact the SUG office and buy a SUG CD! * Be an Active SUG member. Participate in our talks and events so that your voice is heard! Write for README! Start a Local User Group! * Come to one (or both!) of our conferences. Pick up your pen and fill in the travel request form your company requires. You still have time! The SUG Office is open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM EST, Monday through Friday. Alex and the staff can be reached there at (617) 232-0514 or via e-mail at "office@sug.org". We even take Mastercard and Visa!!! Do it because "it's the right thing to do", or do it because of the benefits you get as a member -- it really doesn't matter. Just Do It. The list is a forum for the discussion of the needs of SUG members, both from the user group and from vendors. It also provides SUG with a fast and easy way to alert users to new developments in user group, such as new member benefits or late-breaking conference news. Membership in SUG does not automatically place you on the list. If you are a member of SUg and would like to be on the SUG mailing list, please send your email address and your SUG member i.d number to: 'sugmember-request@sug.org'. If you are a SUG member and you don't want to receive further mailings, you don't need to do anything. For those of you who are certain you are *not* a SUG member and would like to join the group and the mailing-list, we've attached a SUG membership application below. If you would like to be added to the electronic mailing list, be sure to check off the appropriate box on the membership application and include a valid email address. Alternately, you can send mail to 'member-request@sug.org'. The purpose of the list is to create a forum for the discussion of the needs of SUG members, both from the user group and from vendors. It also provides SUG with a fast and easy way to alert users to new developments in user group, such as new member benefits or late-breaking conference news. Newman) Newsgroups: comp.org.sug The Sun User Group currently makes two software libraries on compact disk available to its members. Details for both disks follow. Our aim with this two-disk set has been to reduce the price for disks but to continue to supply as much value-added as possible. To accomplish this, we have released a two disk set. The first contains X11R5 and GNU software, both sourcecode and binaries. The second containins more SPARC binaries, archives, patches, system administration tools, telecommunications packages, and even some games, as well as other useful material not found on previous disks. ***************************************************************************** THE 1992.1 SUG CD ROM ***************************************************************************** SUG CD 1992.1 is X11R5 and GNU on a CDROM, priced at $50 to SUG members, including a caddy! SUG's emphasis has always been on supplying the greatest possible service and value-added to our members. The SUG 1991 disk contained plug-and-play X11R4, 20MB of additional essential binaries, almost 200MB of Sun patches, fully-indexed archives of Sun-related net postings, priced at only $250. The SUG 1992.1 disk, which was assembled by Robert A. Bruce, contains a lot of essential source code, and we decided it would be a great service to make it available right away to our members (and this pricing makes this a good opportunity to become a member!) for $50 per disk (including one of those hard-to-find caddies!). If you are not a SUG member, you can become one for an additional $40 if you live within the US or $55 outside. The SUG 1992.1 CDROM is an ISO 9660 disk (which means it can be used by PC, Macintosh, and other workstations as well), and contains a total of 543MB of material, including: X11R5 SOURCES AND CORE BINARIES (for SPARC) as of several weeks after the initial distribution, thus, four fixes and the the MIT contrib-0 distribution are included (109MB of material).
