NAMED EXCLUSIVE COMPUTER SUPPLIER TO WORLD CUP 1994 World Cup To Use Sun Client-Server Systems MOUNTAIN VIEW, California -- June 16, 1993 -- World Cup USA 1994 today named Sun Microsystems, Inc., as an official marketing partner and exclusive computer supplier for the 1994 World Cup. World Cup USA 1994 will use a client-server information systems model in order to reach its goal of making the games the most technologically advanced ever. Sun Microsystems will provide World Cup `94 with the company's most powerful server, the SPARCcenter(TM) 2000 server, along with SPARCserver(TM) 10 systems and approximately 1,000 workstations, including SPARCclassic(TM) and SPARCstation(TM) LX systems. All Sun(TM) computers will be supported by the Solaris(R) operating environment from SunSoft, the industry's leading distributed computing solution. These computers will be used to manage all mission-critical applications, including: accreditation, results, security, logistics and media systems at all nine game sites, along with all applications used at World Cup office sites. World Cup USA 1994 is the non-profit legal entity charged with staging the 1994 World Cup championship under the direction of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), soccer's international governing body. The 1994 World Cup, the first to be held in the United States, will take place from June 17 to July 17, 1994, in nine cities throughout the United States: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. The FIFA World Cup, the world's largest single-sport event, is held quadrennially, and its trophy is the world's most coveted sports award.
