QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q: Why has Sun elected to offer a one year warranty on the SPARCstation 10 and storage products? A: This change in warranty is driven primarily by the improvement of overall product reliability. Hardware costs and failure rates are decreasing and our products are becoming less complex (# of discrete components). This in turn makes our products easier to service. Because of all these factors, Sun is delighted to pass on to our customers the added benefit of a one year return-to-factory warranty on these new products. Q: Does this mean that all new (subsequent) desktop products will have a one year warranty? A: Given the trend of improved reliability, ease of serviceability and the market trend toward longer warranties, a one year return-to-factory warranty will be under consideration for future desktop products. Q. What does the SPARCstation 10 warranty cover? A. The 1-year return-to-factory warranty includes the monitor, SBus cards, keyboard, memory, and storage. Sun will replace failed parts that are returned to Sun on a best efforts basis (No guaranteed response). Guaranteed response and phone support may be obtained through SunSpectrum Support. Q: Are all storage peripherals going to have a one year warranty? A: Yes, all current and future storage devices will have a standard one year return-to-factory warranty. Q: What if I buy a 4.2-GB Multi-Disk Pack, for example, for use on my SPARCstation 2? How long is the warranty on the disk pack? A: Since the peripheral warranty is independent of the desktop or server to which it is attached, the SPARCstation 2 has a 90 day return-to-factory warranty and the 4.2-GB Multi-Disk Pack has a one year return-to-factory warranty. Q: What if I buy a SPARCcenter Expansion Cabinet, for example, for use on my SPARCcenter(TM) 2000? How long is the warranty on the disk pack? A: Since the peripheral warranty is independent of the desktop or server to which it is attached, the Expansion Cabinet retains its 1-year return-to-factory warranty. The SC2000 continues to have a 90 day on-site warranty. Q: Will upgrades to SPARCstation 10 systems have a one year warranty? A: Yes. The one year warranty applies to the full system or chassis upgrade. Original modules, keyboards, monitors and other peripherals that are not purchased with the upgrade would maintain the original purchase warranty. Proof of purchase is required. Q: What is the customer entitled to with the one year return-to-factory warranty? A: All components of the system or the storage device are warranted against defects for one year from the date of shipment. If a system or storage device fails, Sun will replace/exchange the failed part. Service delivery may vary by locality. Q: How does the new one year parts only (return-to-factory) process work? A: When customers encounter a problem, they phone their local support contact. The local support contact will provide your customers with the specifics of how the process works - remember policies differ from country to country. Very seldom will the customer return the entire system to the factory. The warranty service level offered will be consistent with that country's current warranty offering. Q: Why doesn't Sun offer a one year on-site warranty? A: To offer the one year on-site warranty, Sun would need to bundle the cost of on-site repair into the product prices. In this case, Sun would be raising the prices for everyone, even those customers that do not need an on-site level of warranty service. By making the warranty return-to-factory, customers have the freedom to choose and the ability to budget for and pay for only those services they want. Q: Will replacement parts for these also have a one year warranty? A: Warranty on replacement parts to the SPARCstation and storage devices will remain at 90 days. Spare parts installed within the system or peripheral warranty period are warranted for the duration of the system or peripheral warranty (up to one year from date of purchase). Parts installed outside the system or peripheral warranty period will have a 90 day warranty. Q. Will SPARCengine(TM) processors also have a one year warranty now that the SPARCstation 10 has a one year warranty? A. The OEM boards for the SPARCstation 10 and the storage peripherals will have the one year return-to-factory warranty. This is in addition to the SPARCstation LX(TM) and SPARCclassic(TM) systems. Q: What is the new warranty service level upgrade? A: For those customers who would prefer on-site service for their hardware maintenance during the one year warranty period on the SPARCstation 10, SPARCstation LX, or SPARCclassic sytems, Sun offers SunSpectrum(sm) support contact Customer Support for more details and pricing.
