Citing strong demand in the CIS for Sun's SPARC-based workstations and servers running the Solaris operating environment, the company noted that more than 1,000 of the systems have been shipped into the CIS in the months preceding the office's opening. "We believe that this is the right time to be investing in Russia and the CIS," stated Tim Dwyer, vice president of intercontinental operations. "This region has the potential to be a major market for information systems. Couple this with the country's sophisticated information technology infrastructure and pent-up demand for Sun's products, and the CIS becomes a very significant market opportunity." The new office will allow SMCC to provide local sales, service and marketing support directly to its distributors, value-added resellers and customers in the CIS. Key markets that SMCC is focusing on and recent sales wins include: * Oil and gas -- over 150 systems installed in the CIS in exploration and production, pipeline design and network management. * Design automation -- addressing new product design, factory automation and financial management at five major industrial plants in Russia and the Ukraine. * Research and education -- more than 350 systems installed throughout the CIS at major customer sites including Moscow State University and the Russian Academy of Sciences. SMCC and its partners will also focus on penetrating the telecommunications, finance and banking, and computer-aided publishing markets. Horizontal technologies such as networking, computer-aided software engineering, relational data base management systems (RDBMS) and multi-windowing are in heavy demand in the CIS and are inherent strengths of the SPARC/Solaris platform. SMCC presently has 12 distributors, four authorized training centers and four value-added resellers in the CIS. "Sun recognized the potential of the CIS market early on by establishing relationships with key Russian scientists. Our new office is a logical extension," Dwyer noted. "The CIS' intention overall to build market-driven economies is a good strategic `fit' for Sun given our leadership in rightsizing through open client-server computing. Our business is to help all types of enterprises leverage scarce resources for increased productivity and competitiveness." Robert Hall has been named general manager of the CIS region; Hall is located in the CIS headquarters office in Moscow. More than 50 percent of SMCC's revenues come from non-U.S. markets. The new Moscow office is part of the company's worldwide expansion program SMCC has over 200 offices throughout the world. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation, a subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., is the world's leading supplier of open client-server computing solutions.
