(914) 793-8231 SUNSOFT AND FUJITSU ANNOUNCE SOFTWARE AGREEMENT TOKYO, Japan, June 7, 1993--SunSoft, Inc., and Fujitsu Limited today announced a joint agreement for collaboration in the UNIX(R) software area. The far reaching agreement covers the following areas: -Fujitsu, the second largest computer company in the world, will use SunSoft's Solaris(R) software environment for its full line of S-Family SPARC(R) workstations. -SunSoft and Fujitsu will work together to enhance interoperability between Solaris 2.x and Fujitsu's UXP/DS operating system, increasing the number of applications available to users on both platforms. Today's announcement builds on the long relationship that Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Fujitsu have had with each other in the hardware area including SPARC chip development and Sun workstation OEM sales. The new collaboration will benefit SunSoft's and Fujitsu's customer base in the software area. Users will be able to take advantage of the ease-of-use provided by the consistent interfaces between UXP/DS and Solaris 2.x. Software developers will be able to increase efficiency in application development, allowing them to bring products to market quicker. In addition, the interoperability work between Fujitsu and SunSoft will follow the specifications being developed for the common desktop environment. "Sun and Fujitsu have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship," said Mr. Mikio Ohtsuki, executive vice president and representative director of Fujitsu. "With Solaris on our platform, we expect to greatly enhance this relationship for many years to come." "Fujitsu is a leader in computing and a very strong partner," said Mr.Edward J. Zander, president of SunSoft. "We are happy to partner with Fujitsu to give users the optimal software environment for their computing needs." It is available on the world's highest volume RISC and CISC platforms, SPARC and x86, and will soon be available on the PowerPC platform. More than 8,000 32-bit applications -- the world's largest base -- run on Solaris today.
