Note the transition of the SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 to SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 and the SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 to SPARCserver 600MP Model 514. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) announces the SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 and Model 514 systems. The SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 system uses two 50-MHz SuperSPARC+ processors on two modules. The SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system uses four 50-Mhz SuperSPARC+ processors on dual-wide MBus modules. These are orderable packages and are available now. Please note that the SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 and SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 (@50-MHz/cpu) replaces the SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 and SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 (@45-MHz/cpu). SPARCserver 600MP will support a single 50-Mhz SuperSPARC+ processor. As most demand for this configuration will be upgrades, there will not be an orderable package for the SPARCserver 600MP Model 51. Customers will need to order UG-M41-M51 along with a SPARCserver 600MP M41-based package option if needed. The upgrade will ship in July 1993, upgrading the customer from 40-MHz to 50-MHz processing power. With 50-MHz modules shipping in volume, SPARCserver 600MP customers realize a 10 to 25 percent increase in performance while continuing to maximize their investment. With this announcement, SMCC continues its strong support of the SPARCserver 600MP line, the marketshare leader for multiprocessing (MP) UNIX(R) servers in the industry. TRANSITION SCHEDULE ------------------- Transition of the SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 to SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 and SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 to SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 is effective September 5, 1993. SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 to SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 * Orders for the SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 are automatically linked to the SPARCserver 600MP Model 512. Customers will receive the SPARCserver 600MP Model 512, with dual 50-Mhz SuperSPARC+ processors. * Future orders should be booked for SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 and not SPARCserver 600MP Model 52. SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 to SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 * In the U.S., orders of the SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 will be cancelled since the SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 is being replaced by the SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 * In the U.S., customers that still wish to receive a 4-way multiprocessing system will need to rebook their orders to get the SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system * For international bookings of the SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 to Model 514, not including Europe, please contact your local Sun representative. * For bookings in Europe of the SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 to SPARCserver 600MP Model 514, submit the necessary change orders through the local sales office. SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - All SPARCserver 600MP uniprocessor systems support Solaris(R) 1.1 operating environment Solaris 2.x - All SPARCserver 600MP multiprocessor systems require Solaris 2.x QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. What happens to orders for SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 systems and upgrades? A. In the U.S., the orders will be cancelled since the SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 system is being replaced by the SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system. Customers that still wish to receive a 4-way MP system or upgrade will need to rebook their order to the SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system. All customers may not want to do so due to the differences in the machines. Q. What are the differences between the SPARCserver 600MP Model 54 system and the SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system? A. The SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system is faster since it is based on 50-Mhz processor instead of 45-Mhz processors. However, the SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 configuration will obstruct two of the available SBus slots due to the use of dual-wide MBus modules. This leaves only 2 slots available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note that the SPECrate numbers listed in this section are ESTIMATES only. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What are the performance ratings for the SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system? A. The SPARCserver 600MP Model 514 system is the fastest SPARCserver600MP system ever made. Estimated SPECrate numbers are: SPECrate92_int = 5,643 SPECrate92_fp = 6,731 SPECrate is the best way to measure a systems's throughput performance. Q. Are there any plans to offer a 4-way 50-Mhz system on single-wide MBus modules? A. No. Q. Why did the numbering scheme change with the new model 51 SPARCserver 600MP multiprocessing system? What do the numbers mean? A. The two digit approach did not allow for multiprocessing systems without SuperCache (like the SPARCstation 10 Model 402MP). The first digit in the number indicates processor speed. The higher the number, the faster the processor. The second number indicates whether or not the system has SuperCache. The number one means yes, a zero means no. The third digit indicates the number of processors. So, a Model 512 means a two-way MP system based on 50-MHz SuperSPARC with SuperCache. Q. I just placed an order for a SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 system. What happens to the order? A. No action will be required on the customer's part to change an order. The order will automatically be converted to the SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 configuration. No orders will be accepted for these SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 products after June 30, 1993. Quoting for the Model 52 systems will cease immediately. Q. How are current upgrade paths affected by the new SPARCserver 600MP Model 512? A. Current upgrade paths are affected in name only. The same paths exist. Q. What are the differences between the SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 system and the SPARCserver 600MP Model 52 system? A. The SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 system is faster since it is based on the dual-50-Mhz processors. Q. What are the performance ratings for the SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 system? A. The SPARCserver 600MP Model 512 system performance based on SPECrate performance numbers is: SPECrate92_int = 2,950 SPECrate92_fp = 3,744 SPECrate is the best way to measure a system's throughput performance.
