As a result, for the first time developers will be able to integrate both software development tools and a wide range of applications -- including desktop productivity, multimedia and graphics -- on Sun(TM) SPARC platforms running the Solaris operating system. In addition, this will be the first PCTE-based development environment that allows current development tools to co-exist with emerging object-based technologies on the Sun platform. Developers using this integrated software environment will be able to save time and money while increasing productivity on large-scale software development projects. With Emeraude's new PCTE implementation, the Sun platform provides developers with an immediate solution for addressing large- to medium-grain data integration in distributed CASE environments, while at the same time allowing them to move toward the fine-grain object-oriented integration approach of the Object Management Group (OMG), an industry association endorsed by SMCC. "Emeraude's implementation of ECMA (European Computer Manufacturers' Association) PCTE integrated with ToolTalk is yet another example of our continued commitment to standards and how we enable freedom of choice for our customers," said Mario Dal Canto, director of technical and industrial market development at SMCC. "ECMA PCTE, widely accepted in European markets and an emerging standard for the United States government, complements the direction of Sun Microsystems and the OMG. Supporting it on the industry leading SPARC/Solaris software development platform with ToolTalk is a win/win situation for Sun, Emeraude and our customers." "Incorporating ToolTalk into our implementation of PCTE provides enhanced control integration, allowing users to plug and play tools in an integrated software development environment," said Ian Campbell, managing director, Emeraude. "This will give our customers added flexibility in choosing software development tools that meet their needs today, while easing migration to emerging technologies like objects." "The position of the OMG is that PCTE can be complementary to the specifications of the Object Management Architecture," said John Slitz, vice-president of the OMG. "We recognize PCTE as a useful approach to large- to medium-grain CASE data integration. The joint work between the OMG and PCTE groups can, we believe, lead to a long-term solution for fine-grain objects." As part of its commitment to PCTE, SMCC has joined PIMB, the International Association for the Advancement of PCTE; SMCC also is actively participating in the North American PCTE Initiative (NAPI). Emeraude's new PCTE implementation utilizes SunSoft's ToolTalk inter-application communication software. ToolTalk enables applications to communicate via multicast or object-oriented messaging, giving users the ability to transparently interact with numerous applications at their desktop. ToolTalk is available on several platforms including Sun, SGI, IBM, HP and DEC. It has been incorporated into the common desktop environment specification that was recently submitted to X/Open by HP, IBM, Sun and USL under the common open software environment process. The new product will be demonstrated at the PCTE `93 conference, November, 1993, in Paris. Pricing and availability will be announced at that time. For existing Sun customers, migration to the new product will be an upgrade to their current version. Emeraude, with headquarters in Paris, France, and a U.S. office in Burlington, Mass., is the world's leading supplier of a commercial implementation of the ECMA PCTE specifications.
