The new office will enable SunSelect to take full advantage of the trend in Japan toward rightsizing, meeting that country's growing demand to link desktop computers with the broader enterprise. SunSelect's Japan office will initially focus on developing localized versions of SunSelect(TM) products, as well as expanding relationships with OEMs, distributors and resellers. SunSelect will also take advantage of the market built by Nihon Sun, Sun Microsystem, Inc.'s Japanese subsidiary and the number one supplier of workstations in Japan. "As in the United States, the information industry in Japan is in the midst of a rightsizing revolution," said Dave Power, general manager of SunSelect. "Applications that formerly ran on mainframes are being ported to client/server networks of UNIX(R) workstations and personal computers, thereby increasing the demand for SunSelect products that bridge these two worlds. By establishing an office in Japan, we will have the people and technology in place to compete in this emerging market." SunSelect has named Yukinobu Uyama as country manager for its Japanese operations. Before joining SunSelect, Uyama spent 27 years with IBM Japan in a range of development and product management positions. Most recently, Uyama was a manager in IBM Japan's Enterprise Systems Group. Uyama noted that the potential demand for SunSelect products in Japan is high. "Industry analysts project that by 1995, 40 percent of PCs in Japan will be networked, versus about 15 percent last year," he said. "Moreover, the number of PCs will grow as Microsoft(R) Windows and DOS/V take hold and the price performance of PCs continues to improve. SunSelect is now in an excellent position to take advantage of these trends." About SunSelect SunSelect was established in 1992 as a business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc., dedicated to providing PC users with access to a full range of company-wide resources, regardless of platform or operating system. SunSelect is based in Chelmsford, Mass., with offices in Alameda., Calif., and Bagshot, U.K., in addition to its new Tokyo office. SunSelect products include PC-NFS(R), an open, scalable network operating environment that connects PCs with UNIX systems, minicomputers, mainframes and supercomputers; SelectMAIL(TM) cross-platform email products; and the SunPC(TM) line of high-performance personal computer emulation products. In addition, SunSelect has announced and will soom release Wabi(TM), a technology that allows Microsoft Windows applications to run directly on UNIX-based PCs and workstations at full performance without the need for MS-DOS(TM) or Microsoft Windows. SunSelect products are distributed directly through authorized SunSelect resellers, through local Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) sales offices, and other distribution channels. ********************************************************************** For information about SunFlash send mail to info-sunflash@Sun.COM.
