The new center represents a significant expansion of SunExpress's international operating company, SunExpress International, Inc. The distribution center will enable SunExpress to provide fast delivery on a broad variety of Sun(TM) and third-party products for SPARC(R) systems which run Solaris(R) and other UNIX computing environments. These products include items that are customer installable, such as expansion hardware, software, printers and network communications products. SunExpress will provide next-day delivery on currently stocked items for most of Japan (except Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Okinawa), and optional same-day delivery service in the greater Tokyo region. The company will deliver to more remote areas within five working days. "SunExpress is pleased to offer the breadth of products, the knowledgeable telesales staff and fast delivery times that have made our United States and European operations so successful," said Dorothy Terrell, president of SunExpress, who attended today's opening. SunExpress named Yoichi Hosoi as general manager of SunExpress International, Inc.'s Japanese operation. Mr. Hosoi was previously president and managing director of ViTel Japan, Ltd., where he helped establish the value-added network service market in Japan. "Our test marketing has proven very successful with a steady increase in customer response, and that has prompted us to make this strong commitment to the Japanese market," said Mr. Hosoi. "In turn, we believe that SunExpress's fast delivery and ability to offer services directly from Sun to end-users will help propel the SPARC/Solaris market in Japan." Broad offering of Sun, third-party products SunExpress provides customers with easy telephone access to a wide range of Sun and innovative third-party productsdelivered quickly at low competitive prices. In addition to its fast shipping service, SunExpress will offer free freight, free telephone and fax lines, and a knowledgeable telesales staff to make ordering easy. SunExpress can be reached in Japan at FreeDial 0120-33-9096 weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Customers can also fax orders to 0120-33-9097. Located in Sagamihara, the new SunExpress distribution center is the first that the company has opened outside the United Statesand will greatly broaden SunExpress's presence in Japan. SunExpress first entered the Japanese market in May 1992, initially targeting educational institutions. The company will now substantially increase the number of products, while serving financial, manufacturing and other corporate customers, as well as the educational, government and research communities. As in the United States, SunExpress will offer products not only from Sun, but from third-party suppliers. For example, SunExpress will distribute Tadpole Technology's SPARCbook(TM) portable notebook, which offers workstation performance in a notebook-size machine weighing only seven pounds (three kilos). The company will also complement Sun's own data storage devices with those from Artecon, Inc. SunExpress will market its products through advertising in Japanese trade publications, direct mail promotions, catalogs, and trade shows. SunExpress's first Japanese catalog was released last May. In the coming months, SunExpress will issue larger catalogs that reflect its broader product offering. SunExpress supports SPARC, Solaris, and other computing environments based on the UNIX operating system. The company serves customers in the United States, Japan and Europe and is headquartered in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. # # # Sun, Sun Microsystems, Solaris the Sun logo, SunExpress, and the SunExpress logo are trademarks, registered trademarks or service marks of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
