DataTools will develop a software module that allows the comprehensive database backup facilities provided by SQL-BackTrack for Sybase to be used in conjunction with EpochBackup, Epoch's network-based software that backs up data located on distributed Suns and other UNIX workstations and servers. The SQL-BackTrack EpochBackup Module will seamlessly integrate SYBASE database backup and recovery with EpochBackup's file system backup. Under the terms of the agreement, Epoch will market the SQL-BackTrack EpochBackup Module in conjunction with EpochBackup to its customers worldwide. DataTools will market the SQL-BackTrack EpochBackup Module to VARs, integrators, OEMs and international distributors. The product is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 1993. "Teaming with Epoch allows us to provide customers with 'mainframe class' tools to manage the backup and recovery of both file systems and SYBASE databases centrally," said Jim Nisbet, President of DataTools, Inc. "Epoch has a strong presence in corporate MIS departments with their client/server data management solutions. They are a good partner for DataTools since they view providing a total corporate backup and recovery solution, encompassing file system and database backup facilities, as a key need to fulfill for corporate MIS managers." "DataTools, as evidenced by its leading technology and marketing agreement with Sybase for SYBASE SQL Server 10, is a key player in the database backup and recovery market," said Bob Davoli, President of Epoch. "Working together, DataTools and Epoch are combining their industry-leading technologies to provide MIS-class solutions necessary for deploying global, enterprise-wide business applications." SQL-BackTrack for Sybase is a comprehensive object-level backup and recovery product that automates SYBASE SQL Server database backup and provides capabilities previously unavailable to SYBASE database administrators. Those capabilities include database backup automation, ease of database recovery, incremental backup support, database archiving, and support for both physical and logical format backups with object level recovery. The SQL-BackTrack EpochBackup Module allows uniform, consistent backup procedures for both database and file system backups through the support of "UNIX-like" incremental database dumps. Administrators can simply use the same 0-9 incremental levels for Sybase database backup as they do for file systems. Incremental database backup allows the administrator to back up only the data that has changed since the last backup. Significant time savings can be realized using SQL-BackTrack when compared with the existing database utilities that support only full database backups. Automation of the daily backup routine is achieved via a control file which contains a list of servers, databases and objects to back up, appropriate passwords for accessing the data, and optional choices of encrypting or compressing the data before backup. The system administrator can then schedule SYBASE database backups in an unattended mode at any predetermined time to EpochBackup controlled media or jukeboxes. SQL-BackTrack also overcomes the limitations of the existing SYBASE database utilities through the support of multiple database backups to the same tape or optical disk. This capability lessens human intervention while allowing more data to be backed up to a given media. EpochBackup's support for tape and optical jukeboxes provides true "lights out" backup and recovery operation. Database recovery is simplified, as the administrator can recover the most current version of the database or specify the recovery "as of" a particular date and time. Ease of database recovery is achieved through use of on-line history information, which records the location and time of each daily database backup. EpochBackup then specifies the correct tape or optical disk to load and automates the recovery process. Configuration, Price and Availability ------------------------------------- SQL-BackTrack EpochBackup Module will be available in late 1993 through Epoch and DataTools. Each copy of SQL-BackTrack EpochBackup Module requires, but does not include, SQL-BackTrack for Sybase and EpochBackup. Pricing for the SQL-BackTrack EpochBackup Module is $795. Task Broker 1.1 is now available on SPARC workstations from Artecon, Inc., based on a worldwide exclusive agreement with SAIC. Task Broker, originally developed by HP, monitors and manages processes and performance across a network of workstations. Once configured, Task Broker automatically manages the network process load, moving jobs running on heavily loaded workstations to other, less utilized systems in the network. The result is higher user productivity based on efficient usage of all workstations on the network. Computer intensive applications such as CAE, CAD and imaging can benefit significantly from Task Broker, as can DBMS applications and traditional commercial batch oriented jobs. Task Broker can be used to create a "heterogeneous cluster," allowing a network of machines from multiple vendors to interoperate in a completely transparent fashion. These workstations include Sun SPARC, HP Apollo 9000 Series 700 and HP Apollo 9000 Series 400. "Users in a Task Broker managed network have seen overall performance increases of as much as 300 percent," stated Terry Graf, product marketing manager for HP's Open Systems Software Division. "With the port to SPARC, proper load balancing of a network involving both HP and Sun workstations is also possible." "We intend to port this product to the IBM RS6000 and DEC Alpha as well," explained Oran Thomas, software development manager at SAIC. "The value of load balancing software increases with every platform it supports." In turn, SAIC has signed an exclusive worldwide marketing agreement with Artecon to sell and service the product on non-HP platforms. "SAIC realizes that we have the technical expertise to configure and support this product," explained Mark Reifler, Task Broker product manager at Artecon, "and the ability to bring it to market. It's an excellent blending of the skill sets of the two companies." Task Broker 1.1, recently released by HP, includes a graphical user interface (GUI) that significantly improves its ease-of-use and simplifies administration. System productivity is increased by assigning tasks to the computer on the network best suited for each job. The software allows multiple compute jobs to run in parallel, as on faster systems. Task Broker is now available on SPARC workstations running Solaris 1.X and 2.X. A 10-user license of Task Broker is priced at $5,300. A site license for Task Broker is $30,000. SAIC is a $1.5 billion, systems integration, software development and high technology firm. SAIC puts open software products to work in heterogeneous environments. SAIC also provides X and Motif software application development services. Founded in 1984, Artecon is a leading UNIX systems integrator and manufacturer of value-added hardware and software products for Sun, HP and IBM workstations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Book " Volume 8, X Window System Administrator's Guide With CD-ROM" Contact: Brian Erwin, brian@ora.com Org: O'Reilly & Associates Address: 103A Morris Street, Sebastopol CA 95472 Phone: 707-829-0515 Fax: 707-829-0104 "Volume 8, X Window System Administrator's Guide With CD-ROM" by Linda Mui and Eric Pearce 372 pages; ISBN 0-937175-052-X with CD-ROM (ISBN 0-937175-83-8 without CD-ROM) Price: $59.95 with CD-ROM ($29.95 without CD-ROM) We have released _The X Window System Administrator's Guide_ with CD-ROM. Customers will be able to use the applications side-by-side with Tivoli's applications, access them using Tivoli's point-and-click interface, and take advantage of Tivoli's advanced technologies and built-in services for managing large client/server environments. The Tivoli Management Environment is available now on workstations from Sun Microsystems and Hewlett Packard, and will be available for Windows NT workstations in early 1994. The nine companies are the newest members of the Tivoli Partners Program, which provides technical, marketing and sales support to companies with applications or services for the Tivoli Management Environment. More than 20 companies offer or are developing applications or services for the environment. Charter members of the Tivoli Partners Program, announced earlier this year, include Sybase, LEGENT, AIM Technology, Landmark Systems and Los Altos Technologies. "By opening up our architecture, we're guaranteeing that customers have access to a rich set of best-of-breed applications for systems management, from Tivoli and others," said Tivoli's president Frank Moss. "The result is an open, yet highly integrated and focused approach to systems management, unmatched in our industry, that cuts escalating management costs, improves system performance, and lowers the overall cost of client/server ownership." Based on an industry-standard object-oriented software framework and graphical user interfaces, the Tivoli Management Environment lets organizations manage large client/server computing installations with fewer steps, fewer and less-skilled staff, and less cost. It provides a simplified, unified interface to different systems-management tasks, services, operating systems and hardware platforms, as well as technologies and applications that let companies eliminate, simplify, automate and delegate management tasks. The following companies today announced that they will offer products or services that take advantage of the Tivoli architecture: Cygnus Support -- developer of Cygnus Network Support, an advanced security solution for commercial distributed environments that builds on the well-known Kerberos security standard. Epoch Systems, Inc. -- a leading supplier of client/server data management systems. Epoch offers integrated backup, file migration, and volume and library management software that automatically and transparently manages distributed data on heterogeneous, enterprise-wide networks. Hewlett Packard --developer of HP PerfView, an online distributed performance manager. OPENService SJI, Inc. -- developer of SYSTEMWatch AI-L, an expert system that allows customers to remotely monitor system and network activities at the client level and take remedial action. ProTools -- developer of Foundation Manager/UNIX, a network analysis console capable of monitoring and analyzing up to 256 remote networks in a distributed environment. Raxco -- developer of Security Toolkit, which provides simple and effective network-wide security management for UNIX and OpenVMS environments. Remedy Corporation -- developer of the Action Request System, a sophisticated Help Desk management software program with special tools and facilities for networked environments. Santix Software GmbH -- a consultant group that will provide customers with products and services for integrating the Tivoli Management Environment with popular network management applications. System Architecture, Inc. -- developer of AUTOSYS, a job scheduling and operations automation tool that provides a control system for complex task scheduling in distributed UNIX environments. Most of the vendors' products and services will be available for the Tivoli Management Environment by the fourth quarter of 1993. Productive, Consistent Approach to Systems Management "Customers now have access to an expanding inventory of systems- and network-management applications that take advantage of the Tivoli architecture and its proactive, disciplined management approach," said Gene Grell, manager of the Tivoli Partners Program. "Customers can perform critical tasks such as backup-and-restore, security auditing, job scheduling, and trouble ticketing, directly from their Tivoli desktops and side-by-side with Tivoli's award-winning applications for configuration and change management, automatic software distribution, and other tasks." The Tivoli Management Environment software models resources -- such as workstations, users, groups and file systems -- as icons. System managers will be able to: - access the Partners' applications from the Tivoli system manager's graphical desktop by double-clicking on an icon; - manage resources and services by dragging-and-dropping Tivoli icons onto the Partners' applications; - view system notices from the Partners' applications logged to a central notification bulletin board; - share system-management information between Tivoli and Partner applications; and - take advantage of new Partner applications, which build on the Tivoli framework and its systems-management technologies to simplify tasks such as defining management policies across the network. For example, system managers will be able to select an icon on the Tivoli desktop to launch HP PerfView, which collects resource-utilization information on parameters such as CPU, disk and memory, for historical performance analysis. In the near future, HP PerfView will communicate performance events and information to Tivoli/Sentry_, an application for remote systems monitoring. HP PerfView complements Sentry's real-time, problem-detection and -response capabilities by adding historical performance analysis. The Remedy Action Request System will automatically generate a trouble ticket in response to a Sentry alarm. The Remedy software can then route the problem to the appropriate system manager, notify him via a variety of mechanisms, and assist in resolving the problem by drawing on a database of experience-based information. Epoch's client/server data management products will take advantage of Tivoli's management framework to simplify and ensure consistent administration of policies for data backup, migration, volume and library management across large networks. Using Tivoli's built-in templates, customers will be able to define policies once and apply them to multiple clients and servers throughout the network. For example, to apply a new policy for backing-up data on a subnetwork to a particular group of machines, the system manager will simply drag-and-drop the policy icon onto icons representing the servers. AUTOSYS enables users throughout a distributed computing environment to independently schedule routine and complex jobs, while providing central control and real-time feedback on problems to the systems manager. AUTOSYS will provide systems managers with an enhanced level of control by posting notices of scheduling problems to the Tivoli systems manager' s central bulletin board. Vendors Rally Around Framework The Tivoli architecture is regarded by many customers and industry vendors as the premier solution for managing heterogeneous client/server computing environments. "The integration of HP PerfView into the Tivoli Management Environment is an important step forward in our performance and resource management strategy," said Wayne Morris, product line manager for HP's Software Technology Division. "This integration brings Tivoli customers a powerful distributed performance management solution." "The Tivoli Management Environment provides an intuitive framework for integrating systems and network management functions," said Robert A. Clyde, Raxco's vice president, security products. "Raxco's Security Toolkit product will take advantage of the Tivoli architecture and standards-based graphical desktop, providing an effective, simple method to centrally manage security for a network of systems. Security Toolkit's easy-to-use graphical user interface and client/server architecture make it a natural fit for the Tivoli Management Environment." "Having pioneered the creation of client/server data management solutions for the enterprise, Epoch, through our alliance with Tivoli, will continue to build on our leadership position," said Daniel J. Cronin, vice president of marketing for Epoch Systems. "Tivoli's management framework enhances our backup, file migration and media management software, while providing a single, easy-to-use interface to multi-platform data management. The increasingly broad support for Tivoli's framework and the number of common business partners we share makes this a strategic alliance for success." "Customers building modern network and systems management environments have found both Remedy and Tivoli to be key components of their plans, and have encouraged us to link our products together," said Dave Mahler, Remedy's vice president of marketing. "Remedy has been a strong advocate of application integration, and our work with Tivoli is a reflection of that belief." Tivoli Management Environment Available today, the Tivoli Management Environment includes the object-oriented Tivoli Management Framework, graphical and command-line user interfaces, and several management applications. Tivoli applications include: Tivoli/Works -- a core application that manages basic system resources, including user accounts, host systems (workstations and servers), and the Network Information Service (NIS), as well as simplifies the development, delegation and enforcement of system administration policies. It provides automation and control technologies for managing large distributed networks, including a central notification bulletin board and configuration/change services. Tivoli/Courier -- for automatic distribution of software updates throughout a network and ensuring consistent network-wide configuration of software. Tivoli/Sentry -- for proactively monitoring, spotting and correcting problems on local and remote computers. Tivoli/FSM -- for mounting, managing and ensuring the consistent configuration of file systems across the network. Tivoli also offers Tivoli/ADE, a toolkit for customizing or building applications to take advantage of the Tivoli Management Framework; and the Tivoli/Application Extension Facility (Tivoli/AEF'), a toolkit that lets system managers customize Tivoli applications without programming.
